A New York City police officer named Adeed Fayaz has died after being shot during an attempted robbery.
According to Fox News Digital, Officer Fayez, a 26-year-old husband and father of two young kids, was murdered while with his brother-in-law. They had gone to meet someone who posted a Honda Pilot for sale on Facebook Marketplace, offering to sell it for $24,000.
He apparently lured them down a dark alley before asking “Are you guys carrying a gun?” Both men responded negatively, saying “No.” At that point, the alleged murderer, Randy Jones, put Officer Fayaz in a headlock and pointed a gun at his head, demanding cash from Fayez and his brother-in-law.
Officer Fayez then broke free, at which point Jones allegedly fired the gun and shot him in the head. Jones then fled the scene and drove away in a BMW belonging to his mother. As he fled, Officer Fayez’s brother-in-law apparently pulled his service pistol from its holster and opened fire on Jones, but was not able to hit him.
Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch, speaking about the horrific murder of Officer Fayaz, said:
“It’s a difficult day. You see police officers standing shoulder to shoulder with tears in their eyes.
“This was a police officer who loved his job. Since he was a young person, he wanted to become not just a police officer, but a New York City police officer. He was viciously gunned down in the streets of Brooklyn.”
Jones was eventually tracked down to a hotel, where he was found with a woman and a number of children, and arrested with Officer Fayez’s handcuffs, as the New York Post reported, saying:
Jones remained on the lam until cops tracked him down to a Rockland County hotel Monday — where they took him into custody using Fayaz’s handcuffs.
Police located the getaway vehicle — a black BMW SUV registered to Jones’ mother — on 129th Street and Park Avenue in Harlem on Sunday and impounded it. Detectives were examining the car at the 75th Precinct in Brooklyn on Monday.
On Tuesday, police identified Jones as the alleged shooter and charged him with robbery and murder.
Jones, cuffed and wearing a white Tyvek suit, was led out of the 75th precinct Tuesday night in front of hundreds of police officers, many from the 66th precinct where Fayaz served.
Sickeningly, as Jones was being led into the precinct building, one woman in the crowd shouted “We love you, Randy!” Responding, Jones said, “I love you too.”
Even worse, investigators think this might not be Jones’ first Facebook Marketplace robbery. Again according to the New York Post:
Investigators believe Jones may be behind a similar robbery nearby last month. In that case, the crook ambushed another man at a nearby address on Jan. 13, again under the guise of peddling a car through Facebook Marketplace, only to pull a gun and demand the victim’s money, sources said. The thief made off with $18,000 in that robbery.
