Trump Fulfills Pledge and Brings Back Columbus Day as American Holiday

In a major move that fulfilled a pledge made via Truth Social in April, President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation that once again makes October 13 Columbus Day and calls on Americans to recognize the heroic explorer for the great man of history that he was and honor him as he ought be remembered and honored.

As background, while Columbus Day was a longtime holiday in America, in recent years, woke historians have excoriated Columbus for what they claim were depredations and atrocities he inflicted upon the native peoples of the Americas, and so replaced the day honoring him with “Indigenous Peoples’ Day,” which conservatives hated.

Trump ended that in a proclamation issued on October 9 that reestablished Columbus Day. Beginning the proclamation, he said, “Today our Nation honors the legendary Christopher Columbus — the original American hero, a giant of Western civilization, and one of the most gallant and visionary men to ever walk the face of the earth. This Columbus Day, we honor his life with reverence and gratitude, and we pledge to reclaim his extraordinary legacy of faith, courage, perseverance, and virtue from the left-wing arsonists who have sought to destroy his name and dishonor his memory.”

Then, after describing the history of Columbus’s exploration of the Americas, Trump skewered the leftist radicals for trying to damn his memory, saying, “Outrageously, in recent years, Christopher Columbus has been a prime target of a vicious and merciless campaign to erase our history, slander our heroes, and attack our heritage. Before our very eyes, left-wing radicals toppled his statues, vandalized his monuments, tarnished his character, and sought to exile him from our public spaces.”

He added that he would not allow them to do so and that he sees Christopher Columbus as a real American hero whose memory needs to be honored. He said, “Under my leadership, those days are finally over — and our Nation will now abide by a simple truth: Christopher Columbus was a true American hero, and every citizen is eternally indebted to his relentless determination.”

He added, before declaring that October 13 would once again by Columbus Day, “This Columbus Day, more than 500 years since Columbus arrived in the New World, we follow his example, we echo his resolve, and we offer our gratitude for his life of valor and grit. Above all, we commit to restoring a Nation that once again dares to tame the unknown, honors our rich cultural inheritance, and offers rightful praise to our Creator above.”

President Trump’s doing so fulfills a pledge he made back in April, when the president took to Truth Social to vow that he would do whatever it took to rehabilitate the memory and day celebrating the life of Christopher Columbus, the brave mariner who discovered America. Beginning the momentous post, he announced, “I’m bringing Columbus Day back from the ashes.”

Continuing the post, the president then skewered the radical left for having done so much to damn the memory of the heroic explorer, noting that they even tore down statues of him. He said, “The Democrats did everything possible to destroy Christopher Columbus, his reputation, and all of the Italians that love him so much. They tore down his Statues, and put up nothing but “WOKE,” or even worse, nothing at all!”

Concluding, he made his pledge that Columbus Day would be coming back as a federal holiday, saying, “Well, you’ll be happy to know, Christopher is going to make a major comeback. I am hereby reinstating Columbus Day under the same rules, dates, and locations, as it has had for all of the many decades before!”
