Disney has a long history of pushing their ideologies on the audience, whether the audience wants to hear it or not. At least, that seems to be the case in America. If you live in Hong Kong, however, an episode of the Simpsons that apparently contained lines that the Chinese Communist Party found offensive has been scrubbed from the company’s streaming service.
In the episode titled “One Angry Lisa”, Marge is riding on a peloton-type stationary bike as an on-screen instructor begins showing a picture of the iconic Great Wall of China. Then, the instructor lets out the hilarious line, “Behold the wonders of China. Bitcoin mines, forced labor camps where children make smartphones.”
This is of course a reference to the ongoing investigations into human rights violations in China, where they allegedly use people in internment camps to produce cheaper goods to sell to the West. In 2018, the Associated Press ran an article detailing one such operation that they had unearthed, writing:
“The Associated Press has tracked recent, ongoing shipments from one such factory inside an internment camp to Badger Sportswear, a leading supplier in Statesville, North Carolina. The shipments show how difficult it is to stop products made with forced labor from getting into the global supply chain, even though such imports are illegal in the U.S. Badger CEO John Anton said that the company would source sportswear elsewhere while it investigates, and the U.S. government said Tuesday it was reviewing the reports of forced labor at the factory.”
This is far from the first time that Disney has removed content from its streaming platform to appease the CCP. According to the Financial Times, another episode was removed in 2021 due to its depiction of the Tiananmen Square Massacre. The Financial Times attributed this to a new rule in China, under which no content could be shared that speaks of succession or subversion of the government.
Disney, as a company, has shown that it is unafraid to cram woke ideologies down the throat of its audience in the West. One such movie, “Lightyear” bombed at the box office following complaints about a lesbian kissing scene that many fans said was crammed into the film for no other reason than to be there.
This duality makes it quite clear where Disney’s values lie. They will do whatever they think will make the most money for the company. This should offer a bright light for conservatives who are battling against these woke companies. Given enough profit incentives, companies like Disney will abandon their woke stances faster than you can watch an episode of The Simpsons about Chinese internment camps.
Thus far, Disney has declined to comment. It is not likely that they will change and make a statement on this matter, just as they stayed silent after filming their live-action adaptation of Mulan in an area of China that is near to the camps in question, according to Louder With Crowder.
