WATCH: Governor of Utah Announces Death Penalty Will Be Brought Against Charlie Kirk Assassin

After Tyler Robinson, the man who turned himself in for assassinating conservative icon Charlie Kirk, was arrested, speculation as to his charges and sentence immediately spread across the internet. However, even before he was arrested, Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R) announced his intention to pursue the death penalty.

For context, Krirk was fatally shot on August 10, 2025, while giving a speech at Utah Valley University with a single shot to his throat. Initially, the shooter escaped justice, and the 48 hours after the grisly assassination were spent in a statewide manhunt. However, even as the authorities combed the area for the guilty party, politicians promised harsh punishments for the murderer.

Speaking shortly after the shooting, the Republican governor of Utah confirmed his intention to pursue capital punishment. Gov Cox stated, “Last thing I will just say is we’ve been working with our attorneys, getting everything that we need, affidavits ready so that we can pursue the death penalty in this case, and that will happen here in the state of Utah.”

According to documents posted by high-profile conservative Stephen Crowder, Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder and faces the death penalty for his egregious actions. Announcing the findings, a prominent conservative influencer posted, “🚨 BREAKING: Charlie Kirk assassin set for DEATH PENALTY and EXECUTION after being charged with aggravated murder, per docs from Steven Crowder. Let’s make this quick.”

In an appearance on Fox News, President Trump not only announced the arrest of the suspect but also advocated for the death penalty. Starting his remarks, Trump noted, “With a high degree of certainty, we have him… Somebody close to him essentially went to the father, went to (a) U.S. Marshal who is fantastic–and the person was involved with law enforcement but was a person of faith, a minister–and brought him to a U.S. Marshal, who is fantastic and the father convinced the son, this is it.”

Explaining his wishes for the suspect if convicted, Trump declared, “I hope he gets the death penalty. Charlie Kirk was the finest person; he didn’t deserve this. He worked so hard and so well. Everybody liked him.”

After one of the hosts tried to temper these remarks by speaking about radicals on both sides, Trump interjected, “I tell you something that is going to get me in trouble, I couldn’t care less. Radicals on the right are radical because they don’t want to see crime… Radicals on the left are the problem.”

As reported, other high-profile Republicans reacted to the shooting with shock and called for immediate justice. President Trump, in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, stated, “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one in the United States of America understood or had the Heart of a youth better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
