Speaking during an interview on Fox News Channel with FNC host Will Cain, Vice President JD Vance took a humor-filled blowtorch to California Governor Gavin Newsom, mocking the woke governor for attempting to mimic President Trump in an attempt to mock him and noting that Trump has shown that authenticity now rules in American politics.
As background, VP Vance’s comments about how Gov. Newsom and his team can’t manage to mimic the “king” of digital comedy and beat him at his own game come after Newsom’s press office attempted, throughout August, to mimic the president’s unique posting style in a very lackluster and embarrassing attempt at mockery,
And, in still another one, the California governor wrote, “WOW! TOMORROW HISTORY WILL BE MADE. KaroLYIN LEAVITT WILL HAVE NO ANSWERS FOR THE SUPPOSED “FAKE MEDIA” ABOUT CALIFORNIA’S BEAUTIFUL MAPS. PEOPLE ARE SAYING THEY ARE THE GREATEST MAPS EVER CREATED — EVEN BETTER THAN CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS’. DONALD “THE FAILURE” TRUMP BE WARNED, TOMORROW MAY BE THE WORST DAY OF YOUR LIFE. ALL BECAUSE YOU “MISSED THE DEADLINE.” LIBERATION DAY FOR AMERICA!!! — GCN”
VP JD Vance, commenting to Will Cain on the situation and how dumb it is, noted that Trump has shown the only way to win with online popularity is to be yourself, and that Gavin clearly isn’t doing that. He said, “You can’t mimic the master; you ought to just go and be yourself. And I think the people would like that a lot more than a cheap imitation of the president of the United States.”
Continuing, the vice president described how Newsom’s clear attempts to mimic Trump show that he’s not being himself, which is the sort of tired political move that many voters see straight through. he said, “When I see Gavin Newsom trying to act like Donald Trump, that’s the opposite of authenticity.”
Building on that, VP Vance argued that the California governor is running up against a brick wall of failure because of his slimy lack of authenticity, or even anything approaching it, saying, “He’s not trying to be Gavin Newsom — whoever that is. He’s trying to be a fake carbon copy of Donald Trump. And it just doesn’t work.”
Then, chiming in and totally roasting New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, JD Vance noted how despicable his behavior is, saying, “I don’t know the guy, but my sense is he’s had a very good life in this country. It would be nice to occasionally show a sense of gratitude instead of just attacking the United States or all its problems.”

Returning to the matter of authenticity, he said, “The lesson of President Trump in American politics is you’ve got to be authentic to yourself.” He further noted, “Democrats, the one thing they should learn from President Trump is to laugh at themselves a little bit. They don’t have to be so serious. They don’t have to get offended at everything. Sometimes, it’s actually a good thing to have a sense of humor about our political process.”
