More news continues to roll in from Washington, D.C., as the Trump Administration does what it can to crack down on the crime levels in the capital city and make it a safe and pleasant place for average Americans again, with the news from the night of Saturday, August 16, being that nearly 70 alleged criminals were arrested.
As background, the news on the nearly 70 people who were arrested comes in the context of the president’s decision to federalize the city and have his administration take control of the police force to start cracking down on crime alongside federal agents and National Guard troopers.
Aiding the administration’s move is that Attorney General Pam Bondi moved to temporarily depose the DC police chief and replace her with a high-level DEA official who is more than willing to crack down on crime. AG Bondi also declared DC’s sanctuary policies revoked, and Border Czar Tom Homan has said DC police will henceforth be working with federal immigration authorities.
In any case, the White House reportedly informed Fox News on Sunday, August 17, that, as the network reported online, “Nearly 70 people were arrested in Washington, D.C. on Saturday night, as President Donald Trump’s crackdown on crime continues . . . A total of 68 people were arrested on Saturday night.”
Further, according to Fox News Digital, over a dozen illegal firearms carried by the suspected criminals who were arrested were recovered as well. Amongst those who were arrested, the charges they face include not just resisting arrest, but even more serious offences like aggravated assault and assault on a police officer.
Others face similarly dire charges, such as being fugitives from justice, felony grand larceny, possession of a controlled substance, and fleeing from law enforcement. Other, more minor charges, such as driving with a revoked permit, have also been brought against the dozens who were arrested in the Saturday night sweep.
Also positively for quality of life in the District of Columbia is that the federal authorities acted to clear three homeless encampments in the city, a major move given that homelessness has been a major blight on the city in recent years. Those clearings and dismantlings of the encampments happened without arrests or other incidents, according to Fox News Digital.

Speaking to Fox News Digital about the weekend arrests, Taylor Rogers, a spokesperson for the White House, said that the crackdown and Trump’s leadership generally is “quickly making our nation’s capital safer.” Rogers added, “In less than ten days, over 300 dangerous criminals have already been arrested and taken off the streets of Washington, D.C” and “President Trump is delivering on his campaign promise to clean up this city and restore American Greatness to our cherished capital.”
President Trump, for his part, took to his Truth Social platform to post, “D.C. gave Fake Crime numbers in order to create a false illusion of safety. This is a very bad and dangerous thing to do, and they are under serious investigation for so doing! Until 4 days ago, Washington, D.C., was the most unsafe “city” in the United States, and perhaps the World. Now, in just a short period of time, it is perhaps the safest, and getting better every single hour! People are flocking to D.C. again, and soon, the beautification will begin!”
