Being out of office doesn’t mean the scandals and issues have stopped rolling in for former President Joe Biden and his family, with the latest update in their never-ending saga of issues being a major divorce in the family. This time, it is former President Joe Biden’s daughter, Ashley Biden: she has filed for divorce from her husband, Dr. Howard Krein.
As background, the Ashley Biden-Howard Krein marriage was set up by the former president’s late son, Beau Biden, who was the more responsible of the two but sadly died after a battle with cancer in 2015. Dr. Krein reportedly proposed to Ashley after getting the blessing of the then-Vice President in 2011. Biden, at the time, said, “This is the right guy.” He added, “And he’s getting a helluva woman.”
Commenting on the matter at the 2021 Democratic National Convention event in Charlotte, North Carolina, Ashley, who was introduced by her father at the event, commented on how he made sure to stay deeply involved with the wedding despite being busy as VP at the time.
She said, “At the time, my dad was vice president, but he was also that dad who literally set up the entire reception.” She added, commenting on how he was sweetly jumping into action for his daughter’s wedding to make sure everything was perfect, “He was riding around in his John Deere 4-wheeler, fixing the place settings, arranging the plants, and by the way, he was very emotional.”
In any case, now Ashley and Dr. Krein are divorced, as became clear when she made the filing in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas on Monday, August 11. Divorce records are made publicly available in Philadelphia, and this one has been confirmed, but it does not state the reason for the couple’s splitting up.
Ashley announced the news via her Instagram account, posting a story that, as the Philadelphia Inquirer reports, “featured a photo of her walking through a park and flashing a thumbs-up, and was set to the song ‘Freedom’ by Beyoncé.” As a caption, she posted a quote that read: “New life, new beginnings means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before.”
Previously, Ashley made news in March, when President Trump yanked away the expensive and expansive Secret Service protection that was being provided to both her and her surviving brother, the ne’er-do-well Hunter Biden, free of charge by the United States taxpayer.

Announcing as much on Truth Social, the president said, “Hunter Biden has had Secret Service protection for an extended period of time, all paid for by the United States Taxpayer. There are as many as 18 people on this Detail, which is ridiculous! He is currently vacationing in, of all places, South Africa, where the Human Rights of people has been strenuously questioned. Because of this, South Africa has been taken off our list of Countries receiving Economic and Financial Assistance. Please be advised that, effective immediately, Hunter Biden will no longer receive Secret Service protection. Likewise, Ashley Biden who has 13 agents will be taken off the list.”
