Second-amendment hero Kyle Rittenhouse, who was acquitted on all murder charges a year ago in the self-defense killing of two rioters, is headed back to court.
A judge issued a ruling this past week that a wrongful death suit filed by the father of one of the men killed in Kenosha riots by Rittenhouse, Anthony Huber, could proceed. The suit is focused on “the city and county of Kenosha” but targets Rittenhouse secondarily.
According to the AP, John Huber’s lawsuit contends that Rittenhouse “conspired with law enforcement to cause harm to protestors.” It goes onto claim that “a dangerous situation that violated his son’s constitutional rights and resulted in his death.”
While the loss of a child would be impossibly difficult to overcome, the elder Huber seems to think that his domestic-abuser son had every right to target Rittenhouse for violence. Unfortunately, Huber found out what happens when attacking an arm defender. He was shot and killed while Rittenhouse was running away from his assailants.
In addition to the self-defense killing of Huber, Rittenhouse also killed attacker Joseph Rosenbaum and wounded another, Gaige Grosskreutz.
The damages sought by John Huber are unknown at this time.
CNN narrated the famous video of Rittenhouse reacting to each of the not guilty verdicts reached by the Wisconsin jury when it was read in November of 2021.
Rittenhouse, wearing a dark jacket with a burgundy tie and shirt, stood behind the defense table as each not guilty verdict was read. He tried to hold back tears, then sobbed and appeared to collapse forward on the table, where his attorney embraced him.
Appearing on Tucker Carlson’s program shortly thereafter, Rittenhouse applauded the verdict, saying the jury came to the correct conclusion while also sharing how understandably difficult life had been up to that moment.
“The jury reached the correct verdict. Self-defense is not illegal. And I believe they came to the correct verdict and I’m glad that everything went well,” he told Carlson. “It’s been a rough journey, but we made it through it. We made it through the hard part.”
CNN described the jury as a mix of men and women who deliberated for more than 25 hours.
The panel of five men and seven women deliberated more than 25 hours over the past four days in a closely-watched case that polarized an already divided nation. The verdict cannot be appealed.
The 12-person jury, made up of five men and seven women, started deliberating on five felony charges Tuesday morning. The jury asked two questions on Tuesday to get copies of the jury instructions.
Commentators on the latest lawsuit have wondered if the acquitted young man’s regular appearances on television and podcasts will hurt his defense in the coming trial. Rittenhouse became a habitual guest on some of the largest conservative programs in the wake of his acquittal, conducting extensive interviews on various Fox News shows, Tucker Carlson’s included, as well as with personalities like Stephen Crowder.
He has also done countless podcast appearances.
While these speaking engagements are well within his right, and while his story was compelling to those audiences, at the same time he has spoken quite freely and confidently. This has led to some concern that even just one comment made during the course of those interviews could later be used against him.
The trial does not have a date set to begin.
