Blue State Democrat Secretary of State Faces Impeachment Over Corruption Concerns

Democrats keep getting walloped by bad news about corruption investigations. On Tuesday, June 3, Michigan Republicans dropped the hammer on Michigan’s embattled Democratic Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson, bringing articles of impeachment against her over what appears to be a few major instances of corruption and malfeasance.

According to the three articles of impeachment Secretary of State Benson faces, which were brought by Republican state Rep. James DeSana, Benson did things like make an $82,500 donation from her PAC to Michigan Supreme Court Justice Kyra Harris Bolden’s election campaign just one month before she then argued a case in front of Justice Bolden. Further, Benson is accused of failing to preserve election records and coercing election certifications out of local boards of canvassers.

Speaking about the resolution in a press conference, Rep. DeSana said, “As a legislator and lifelong Michigan resident, it is my belief that we are dealing with the most lawless Secretary of State in Michigan history. Not only has she flaunted numerous Michigan laws, but Michigan courts have ruled against her on seven separate occasions.”

Continuing, Rep. DeSana claimed that the Secretary of State had even openly admitted that she wouldn’t follow laws she doesn’t agree with, saying, “Even Secretary Benson’s attorney admitted in open court that she will only follow the laws she deems constitutional or agrees with.”

State Rep. DeSana added, further slamming Secretary Benson over that matter and arguing that the legislature had to act to restrain her from such illegal actions, “Her job is to enforce the law, not interpret or rewrite it. Since the Michigan Supreme Court and Attorney General won’t hold her accountable, it is up to the Legislature to act.”

He further added that accountability on issues like this one is required so that people in Michigan trust the democratic process, saying, “This is a matter of accountability, transparency, and the integrity of our elections. If the people of Michigan are to trust our democratic process, we must ensure that those in power are held to the rule of law.”

Similarly, Republican state Rep. Jay DeBoyer, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, framed the matter as being absolutely required and that the Secretary can’t just refuse to comply with their demands made as part of the oversight process, saying, “We have the right to do oversight. … We have the right to request documents, and there is no provision in law that says she can’t give us those documents. I can’t see it any other way than lawlessness. I can’t see it any other way. We are legitimately asking for things we are legitimately entitled to.”

Benson, for her part, insisted that the investigation into her is purely a conspiracy theory, saying, “This is Republican lawmakers abusing their authority to access sensitive election information that would allow them — or any conspiracy theorists they share it with — to tamper with election equipment, interfere with the chain of custody of ballots, or impersonate a clerk on Election Day. I believe in oversight and I believe in transparency. This isn’t it.”
