Despite opposition from the woke city of Hyattsville, Maryland, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested Brayan Eleazar Angulo-Barrios, an illegal immigrant. Angulo-Barrios had a long rap sheet and was protected by local police after he was released from jail after serving a year-long sentence for weapons and drug charges.
For context, sanctuary cities are left-leaning municipalities with laws that prevent law enforcement from cooperating wth ICE to deport criminal illegal immigrants. Many conservatives, including Trump cabinet members, have blasted these cities for their defiance of the law.
In any case, ICE officials believe that Angulo-Barrios is a known 18th Street gang member with previous convictions for possession of a loaded handgun and possession of narcotics with the intent to distribute. Nobody is sure when he entered the nation illegally, but after his arrest, the Prince George’s County Police refused to turn him over to ICE.
Reacting to this scandal and other prominent cases, the White House issued a document slamming the far-left Maryland town. Titled ‘Sanctuary’ Policies Put Accused Killer Back on the Streets,’ the April 15, 2025, document said, “So-called ‘sanctuary’ jurisdictions endanger the lives of the Americans who live there.”
Proceeding to demolish the mainstream media narrative, the letter provided several relevant examples. The document said, “The latest example comes in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where an illegal immigrant was arrested, charged with murder and assault, then released back onto the streets despite an ICE immigration detainer request — a result of the county’s insane “sanctuary” policies. Fortunately, ICE eventually arrested the illegal immigrant, and he’ll soon be on his way back to Guatemala.”
Laying out several examples, the White House savaged the Maryland city for its soft-on-crime policies. The letter stated, “The negligence of leftist politicians is putting lives at risk. In 2019, then-Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks — now a U.S. Senator — bragged about “not participating in immigration enforcement” and claimed in 2024 that immigration enforcement “should not be the responsibility of local governments.'”
Still not done, the letter said, “In 2019, then-Prince George’s County Council Member Deni Taveras — now a member of the Maryland House of Delegates — said, ‘there is an incredible amount of fear’ about immigration enforcement.”

Blasting another woke official, the letter listed another woke bureaucrat and their mistakes. Adding to the list, the White House said, “Acting Prince George’s County Executive Tara Jackson said: “The Prince George’s County Police Department does not engage in federal immigration enforcement actions … Our focus is on ensuring public safety and building trust with all members of our community, regardless of their immigration status.'”

Concluding the document, the White House slammed a state senator for encouraging the police to defy ICE. The letter said, “Maryland State Sen. Alonzo Washington (D-Prince George’s) said local law enforcement should not be enforcing immigration laws: ‘We’re going to build a better relationship with our immigrant community so we know exactly who they are and we can protect them.'”
