Director of the White House National Economic Council Kevin Hasset recently explained why egg prices have continued to rise during an interview with CBS’s Margaret Brennan. According to the Trump administration official, the Biden-Harris administration had a policy of ” killing chickens” in response to the Avian Flu, creating a drastic shortage in egg supplies.
Hasset was initially asked by Brennan during a recent “Face the Nation” segment, “What is the plan you’re going to what are you going to do?” In response, he called out the Biden policy that reportedly spent billions on killing the livestock. “So again, the Biden plan was to just kill chickens, and they spent billions of dollars just randomly killing chickens within a perimeter where they found a sick chicken,” he said.
The economic council director highlighted the tangible impact such policy has on grocery store egg supplies. “And so you go, I just went to the grocery store I shot for our family. Love to look at prices, and there were no eggs at the store yesterday, just a few. And so that happened because they killed all the chickens,” he said.
However, Hasset pointed out there are better alternatives the policies employed under former President Biden. “And so what we need to do is have better ways with biosecurity and medication and so on to make sure that the perimeter doesn’t have to kill the chickens,” he said. “Have a better, smarter perimeter, as having a smart perimeter is what we’re working on, and we’re finalizing the ideas about how to do that with the best scientists in government.”
He further pointed out that had this been implemented earlier, egg prices would be substantially lower. “And that’s the kind of thing that should have happened a year ago, and if it had, then egg prices would be a lot better than they are now,” he added.
Hasset also noted that Avian Flu is mostly spread by other birds. “But the Avian thing is a real thing, and by the way, it’s spread mostly by ducks and geese,” he said. Suggesting it is counterintuitive to kill chickens for this reason, he said, :And so think about it, they’re killing chickens to stop the spread. The chickens don’t really fly.”
He maintained, “The spread is happening from the geese of the ducks. And so why does it make any sense to have a big perimeter of dead chickens when it’s the ducks or the geese that are spreading it.” Brennan concluded, “Well, the department of agriculture policy has been to, to kill those chickens. As you know, but we’ll watch from the details of that.”

Conservatives have reacted to the news, suggesting the policy was put in place to keep food prices high and sabotage President Trump. “We know why. prices would go up to blame Trump,” one person said. Another person wrote, “Because they wanted to create egg shortage and help them get a talking point against @realDonaldTrump.”
