Actor Richard Gere recently slammed President Donald Trump, claiming he is a “bully” and a “thug” on Saturday during the International Goya Awards in Spain, the country’s top film awards ceremony. After receiving an award, the 75-year-old actor took the opportunity to comment on the political atmosphere in the United States.
Gere argued that “authoritarianism” is on the rise, not just in America, but around the world. The actor claimed that his colleagues must be “brave” and “courageous” to stand up to their political opponents. “I’m coming for a place now that we’re in a very dark place in America where we have a bully and a thug who’s the president of United States,” Gere said on stage.
After his initial dig at President Trump, he received applause from the audience, indicating the overseas film industry shares the same attitude toward Trump as Hollywood. Gere then informed the audience, “But it’s not just in the US. It’s everywhere, everywhere.” Gere proceeded to imply that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was in the same camp as Trump.
He continued, “You know, I read a really moving letter in the New York Times from a gentleman in Hungary, and he’s he was the slippery slope of how this happens everywhere. Authoritarianism takes us all over.” He stressed to the crowd, “We have to be vigilant. We have to be alert, we have to be energetic. We have to be brave. We have to be courageous.”
Gere said, “And everyone is watching this in the Spanish-speaking world and elsewhere, we have to be willing to stand up, tell the truth, be honest, and that there’s a there’s a place in all of our lives for basic kindness, for basic love and understanding.” The actor’s comments mirror the sentiment of various left-leaning political figures in the United States.
The American Tribune recently reported on the alarming rhetoric from numerous congressional Democrats during a recent public protest outside of the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. The liberal politicians were protesting the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, for its efforts to downsize the federal government.
Claiming Musk was a Nazi, Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) claimed, “Elon Musk is a Nazi nepo baby, a godless lawless billionaire, who no one elected.” She added, “Elon, this is the American people. This is not your trashy Cybertruck that you can just dismantle, pick apart, and sell the pieces of.” Implying liberal activism will spill onto the “streets,” she stated, “We will see you in the court, in Congress, in the streets.”
