Some conservative users on social media cheered on the idea of California seceding from the union as plans for a “Calexit” initiative continue to materialize. Reportedly, the move would allow California to cease its belonging to the United States if enough signatures are obtained. Considering the power and influence the Golden State has on American politics and culture, some think it might not be a bad idea.
If the measure passes, the proposed “Calexit” would appear on the 2028 ballot asking voters, “Should California leave the United States and become a free and independent country?” For the initiative to pass, it would require at least 50% of voters to participate in the election and at least 55% to vote in favor of the measure.
Many on social media quickly approve of California’s proposed secession. “Yes please!!” one person exclaimed. “Oh please do…. We’d be way more normal a country. Can ya take ILLINOIS MN AND NY with,” another user commented.” One eager individual added, “Please let this happen.” Another wrote, “46 states wish CA would. We are tired of seeing CA burn. Take care of yourself CA.”
However, other leaned on the side of pragmatism, suggesting such a move is not feasible. “They can’t realistically let it happen. Socialist are parasites. They can’t survive without a host feeding life into their putrefying system. If they secede, everyone there with drive and ambition will flee,” one person said. Opining on the political implications, another said, “Do it. Good riddance. Dems will never win another election without those electoral votes.”
The American Tribune recently reported on the news that the talks were in place to set up the secession. “The Attorney General prepares the legal title and summary that is required to appear on initiative petitions. When the official language is complete, the Attorney General forwards it to the proponent and to the Secretary of State, and the initiative may be circulated for signatures,” a report from the California Secretary of State read.
The report added, “If enacted, this measure places the following question on November 2028 ballot: “Should California leave the United States and become a free and independent country?” If at least 50% of registered voters participate in that election, and at least 55% vote “yes”, it would constitute “a vote of no confidence in the United States of America” and “expression of the will of the people of California” to become an independent country, but would not change California’s current government or relationship with the United States.”
Continuing, it said, “Creates commission to report on California’s viability as independent country. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local governments: Around $10 million dollars in one-time election-related costs and to form the new commission on national sovereignty and independence. Around $2 million in annual state costs to operate the commission. (24-0001A2.)”
