An innocent father was recently killed after trying to stop two teenage robbery suspects at a grocery store in Portland, Oregon. Reportedly, 47-year-old Jonathan Trent was found with a gunshot wound at a Fred Meyer grocery store in Portland’s Hazelwood neighborhood on January 13. He was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.
According to reports, a 16-year-old male was arrested in connection to the shooting before another 15-year-old suspect was arrested roughly a week after. The teens are currently being held in a juvenile detention center and have been charged with murder. “The initial investigation suggests that Trent was shot after witnessing a robbery and attempting to stop the suspect,” a police report on the incident stated.
Sgt. Matt Jacobsen with the department’s major crimes unit explained that the suspects were involved in other crimes in the area. “Throughout the course of the investigation, we’re able to identify five events that were related to this group,” he said. “This type of crime with these youths is fairly uncommon. Unfortunately, guns are available in this community and it’s deeply concerning to see youth of this age, armed with firearms.”
A GoFundMe has since been set up for Trent’s family in the wake of his death. The fundraiser has already exceeded its goal of raising $25,000, bringing in over $33,000 as of writing this article. “It is with a heavy heart that I share the devastating news of Jon Trent’s death. Jon was the beloved father of Justin a cherished member of our swim family,” the description written by a friend read.
“Jon was a man of warmth, kindness, and joy who brought light to everyone around him. He was a constant presence at the pool, supporting Justin and inspiring our community with his positivity and generous spirit. His loss has left a profound void in our hearts and in the lives of those who knew him,” the statement added. “As Justin and his mother, May, navigate this unimaginable loss, we want to come together as a community to ease their financial burden. Funds raised will go directly to the family to help cover living costs, and other immediate needs during this difficult time.”
The heartfelt statement in honor of Trent concluded, “Please join us in honoring Jon’s memory by supporting his family during this challenging period. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference and will provide much-needed relief to May and Justin as they face the road ahead. Thank you for your compassion, generosity, and support. Together, let us surround Jon’s family with love and strength as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.”
The organizer, Heather Franklin, further noted, “I feel very grateful to have spent time with Jon. His love for and dedication to his son, Justin, left a huge impression on me. His death is a tragedy. All my love to May and Justin. May his memory be a blessing.” She added, “Thank you for continuing to show Justin and May love and support. Your generosity is meaningful and very appreciated.”
