A Michigan husband and wife tragically died in two separate incidents that occurred between Christmas Day and the new year. Scott and Mary Lou Levitan, both 66-year-old residents of Livonia, Michigan, passed away due to freak accidents just several days apart. Scott succumbed to injuries sustained while falling into a frozen lake while fishing with his 15-year-old grandson on December 26. As Mary Lou was going to retrieve her husband’s car the next day, she was fatally struck by another vehicle.
Addressing the incident, a statement from the sheriff’s office read, “The two had gone onto the ice and were drilling a hole to go ice fishing when the ice gave way, and the grandfather fell into the ice water. The boy called 911 and then attempted to help his grandfather out of the water but the ice broke and he fell into the water too.”
“[The rescuer] was able to assist the boy out of the water and then grabbed a second kayak to assist the grandfather,” the sheriff’s office continued, illustrating the fatal accident. “The neighbor could not remove the grandfather because the ice kept breaking but he was able to keep the grandfather’s head above the water until help arrived.”
Scott was subsequently placed on life support after he was finally removed from the water. The very next day, Mary Lou was a backseat passenger when going to retrieve his car when a 19-year-old driver swerved into her lane for “an unknown reason” and collided with their vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Several days later on December 31, Scott was removed from life support. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard released a statement addressing the incident. “This is an unspeakable tragedy that has befallen this family in a very short time,” Bouchard said. “Two tragic and unrelated incidents happen within 24 hours of each other.” He added, “It’s hard to wrap your hands around it. Our prayers are with the family.”
The American Tribune reported on another tragic accident in which two teenage brothers went missing last month after a kayak accident while on a hunting trip. The mother of the two boys, April Clark explained the situation in a GoFundMe. “My name is April Clark. I’m raising money for my 2 boys who are missing at the thermlito afterbay in Oroville ca. My two handsome sons went hunting Saturday Dec 14th 2024. Wesley 17 went out on the kayak and over turned and his brother Andruw 19 seen him in distress called 911 and stated there was no time to wait he was going in to save his brother,” the description read.
Clark continued, “Neither one of my boys have been seen since Saturday. Andruw is a hero in my eyes. Im asking for help I drive 45 miles out everyday to search for my boys and some family is staying out there every night. The Sheriff is saying this is now a search and recovery so i will have to also plan to lay my two boys to rest. This is a freak accident that my family and I are trying to wrap our heads around and we also have 4 girls at home who we still need to care for.”
