In a very funny CNN panel on Tuesday, December 24, Republican strategist Scott Jennings, a CNN regular despite his conservative political leanings, praised President-elect Donald Trump’s idea of purchasing Greenland from Denmark. Particularly, he said that doing so would be “a great legacy piece” for Trump and a way to access “vital” territory.
As background, Trump wrote in a Monday, December 23 post on his Truth Social platform, “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity. Ken will do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States. Thank you Ken, and congratulations!”
Jennings, in any case, angered his CNN counterparts by praising that plan. Beginning, Jennings said that America does, in fact, “need Greenland” and that it would be an amazing landmass for America to have control over. Making that introductory point, he said, “Yes, we need Greenland. Greenland is an amazing thing to have.”
Continuing, he framed the idea as being like the board game “Monopoly” in that having the “vital properties” is key to winning the game later on. He said, on that point, “It’s like, do you ever play Monopoly? You know, like, the first row of properties, like, they’re cheap. You need those, those are vital properties.”
And, emphasizing his own support for the Greenland idea and joking that he could be the military governor of it, Jennings said, “I am for Greenland. I wanted him to do it before, I want him to do it now, and I am personally and on television applying to be the military governor of Greenland if, in fact, we do take control of it.”
Jennings then added, reiterating his support for the idea and commenting on the sort of highly positive legacy it would cement for a Trump presidency, “This is an amazing idea and I know everybody is laughing about it, but if he accomplishes this in four years, it will be a great legacy piece for Donald Trump.”
As could be expected, that got his panel counterpart, Democratic strategist Maria Cardona, piping mad and angrily sarcastic. She said, snapping about the Monopoly comparison, “Well, I certainly agree that we should take him seriously, that he wants to do this — it doesn’t make it a good idea or a sane idea. I mean, pass go, collect $200 – who knows?”
She added, angrily referring to Trump’s comments on the Panama Canal, “The fact of the matter is, is that we can’t take the Panama Canal just by saying we want to take the Panama Canal. It doesn’t belong to us, and so maybe Trump should crack a book, read the law, look at history, try to understand what actually happened not just 25 years ago, but in 1977 and 100 years ago, when the the construction of the Panama Canal started. It doesn’t belong to us, and so just by saying it doesn’t make it so, it doesn’t make it a good idea.”
