In an absolutely wild post on Truth Social about his appointed Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark, President-elect Donald Trump signaled that he remains committed to an idea he posted about early in his first administration, one that has captured the public mind since then: the potential purchase of Greenland by America.
As background, Greenland is under the rule of the Kingdom of Denmark. It has not made any indication that it wishes to be under American rather than Danish rule, and in fact has stated quite the opposite, but many Americans have, regardless, remained attached to the idea that Greenland could become an American province.
In any case, President-elect Trump, in his Truth Social post that included the mention of Greenland, was announcing his ambassador appointee and commenting on that appointee’s background. Beginning, he said, “I am pleased to announce Ken Howery as my choice for United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark.”
Continuing, he noted what that appointee did during the first Trump administration, saying, “Ken is a World renowned entrepreneur, investor, and public servant, who served our Nation brilliantly during my First Term as U.S. Ambassador to Sweden, where he led efforts to increase Defense, Security, and Economic Cooperation between our Countries.”
Then, describing the appointee’s business background and connections to PayPal and Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, Trump wrote, “As a Co-Founder of PayPal and venture capital fund, Founders Fund, Ken turned American Innovation and Tech leadership into Global success stories, and that experience will be invaluable in representing us abroad.”
That is when he got to the comment about Greenland, writing, “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity. Ken will do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States. Thank you Ken, and congratulations!”
Trump has mentioned taking over other territory recently as well. For example, in a post about Canada, he said, “No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense! Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!”
Similarly, Trump has written about taking back the Panama Canal. In that late-December post, he said, “The Panama Canal is considered a VITAL National Asset for the United States, due to its critical role to America’s Economy and National Security. A secure Panama Canal is crucial for U.S. Commerce, and rapid deployment of the Navy, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and drastically cuts shipping times to U.S. ports. The United States is the Number One user of the Canal, with over 70 percent of all transits heading to, or from, U.S. ports.”
He added, “Considered one of the Wonders of the Modern World, the Panama Canal opened for business 110 years ago, and was built at HUGE cost to the United States in lives and treasure – 38,000 American men died from infected mosquitos in the jungles during construction. Teddy Roosevelt was President of the United States at the time of its building, and understood the strength of Naval Power and Trade. When President Jimmy Carter foolishly gave it away, for One Dollar, during his term in Office, it was solely for Panama to manage, not China, or anyone else.”
He also said, “It was likewise not given for Panama to charge the United States, its Navy, and corporations, doing business within our Country, exorbitant prices and rates of passage. Our Navy and Commerce have been treated in a very unfair and injudicious way. The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama by the U.S. This complete “rip-off” of our Country will immediately stop.”
