A driver in California recently plowed through a fitness center, crashing what appears to be a Mercedes-Benz into the facilities’ pool. Footage of the aftermath shows first responders fishing the car out of the pool, which had been completely submerged in the water. According to reports, the incident occurred in Redlands, California, just over 60 miles east of Los Angeles.
Addressing the incident, the California Highway Patrol wrote in a Facebook post, “🚨 Avoid Distractions: Stay Focused Behind the Wheel! 🚨 This shocking incident reminds us how dangerous distractions can be. A driver lost control, driving into a gym and straight into a swimming pool. Thankfully, no one was injured, but this could have been tragic.”
Sharing a clip of the incident on X, ABC News wrote in the caption, “Firefighters in California were dispatched to “a unique motor vehicle accident” on Friday night: A car drove through a wall and plunged into the pool of a fitness center. Authorities said the driver suffered only minor injuries. Nobody was in the pool at the time of the crash.”
In a post shared on Facebook, ABC News wrote, “Firefighters in Southern California were dispatched to “a unique motor vehicle accident” on Friday night: A car drove through a wall and plunged into the pool of a fitness center.” The outlet added, “Authorities in Redlands shared the video on social media. They said the driver escaped with minor injuries and nobody was in the pool at the time of the crash. They didn’t say what caused the crash, but they took the opportunity to remind motorists “to stay focused and drive safely.”
Users on social media reacted to the incident, with many taking the opportunity to deliver clever jokes. “Pretty sure the driver flooded the engine…” one person wrote. Another said, “To be fair, Google Maps has it marked as a drive-thru car wash.” Similarly, another person quipped, “Maybe the driver was in charge of the car pool?” Another comment read, “I guess he needed a car wash. 🤭”
On a more serious note, one user urged drivers not to get distracted on while on the road. While there relatively minor consequences in this incident, that may not always be the case. “Stay focused is a challenge ot many people because they are often staring at their phones, even texting. It is illegal in many states, but they do it anyway. 😬 My pet peeve seeing driving staring at their phones conducting business and not paying attention to their business of driving safe!” they wrote.
