Way back when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) got into a stunning, very embarrassing verbal fight in the middle of a House Oversight Committee hearing with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) set off AOC by commenting on the galling nature of the matter, which AOC said was being a bully,
Sen. Fetterman, responding to the shocking incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter), joked that it was about as painfully embarrassing to watch as daytime television drama like Jerry Springer, saying, “In the past, I’ve described the U.S. House as The Jerry Springer Show. Today, I’m apologizing to The Jerry Springer Show.”
AOC freaked out in response and called him a “bully.” She said, “I understand you likely would not have stood up for your colleague and seem to be confused about racism and misogyny being a ‘both sides’ issue.” Continuing, she added, “But I stand up to bullies, instead of becoming one.” She then suggested that Sen. Fetterman doesn’t stand up for “the women of Pennsylvania,” writing, “And to the women of Pennsylvania: I’d stand up for you too.” She concluded by saying, “Enjoy your Friday.”
Sen. Fetterman didn’t let it end there. Instead, he spoke about it during a later interview with CNN personality Jake Tapper, arguing that Rep. AOC’s attack on him was “absurd” and that he was, in the tweet about Jerry Springer, “simply responding to the kind of chaos and everything that, Representative Greene started.”
Making that point, Sen. Fetterman claimed to just be commenting on what MTG started, but got in a sly comment about the other congresswomen as well, indicating they shouldn’t be proud of what they were up to. He said, referring to AOC’s accusation that he was bullying her, “That’s absurd. I was just simply responding to the kind of chaos and everything that, Representative Greene started as well. And if everyone on the committee was proud of what they’ve produced, they’re entitled to their opinion.”
Continuing, he further roasted the collection of them for the extremely undignified display they put on during the hearing, noting that it’s not something he would want to show to middle schoolers learning about the functioning of the American government. He said, “Or if they feel that this is the kind of a video that you want to send to a, a classroom of eighth grade civics kind of students across America.”
He then added the it is obvious what he would do, which is not think that that sort of behavior is acceptable on the floor of Congress, but that it is “their choice” if they want to continue behaving in such a manner. He said, “Again, that’s their choice. Now, to me, you know, you know what I would do, that’s their choice.”
Concluding, Fetterman told Tapper, “But if I’m going to push back against anything that’s going to be pushing back against Hamas and not vote against Israel, and I’m going to push back against Putin, I’m not going to vote against the aid for Ukraine the way Representative Greene has done. And then I’m also going to push back against the TikTok vote as well. And now TikTok is essentially a Chinese communist government asset.”
