Defeated Democratic Senator Sherod Brown (D-OH) recently claimed that Republicans “rigged the system” to win elections, in a seeming critique of the Democratic processes that elected GOP candidates across the nation last month. Brown, who had served as a senator for Ohio since 2007, was decisively unseated by Republican Challenger Bernie Moreno, who took 50.2% of the vote compared to Brown’s 46.4%.
In a recent interview with CNN, Brown slammed the Republican Party for running ads on the contentious social issue of transgenderism’s increasing prevalence in society. “They lie about it, and they put in this case, they spent $40 million on eight different ads on that issue,” the Ohio Democrat said. “Yeah, they were talking about how to make Ohio a better state. They’re not doing their job on education, they’re not doing their job on health care. They’re not doing their job on creating jobs,” Brown continued, blasting the GOP.
However, the CNN reporter interviewing Brown correctly pointed out, “But they’re winning elections,” before asking the outgoing senator, “Are they successful?” Brown responded, claiming Republican candidates are winning elections partly because they have “rigged the system” in their favor. Substantiating his claim, he touted Democrat rhetoric that the GOP has made it “harder to vote,” presumably referencing efforts to require proof of citizenship to participate in elections.
“They’re winning elections in part because they’ve rigged the system,” Brown said, “They made it harder to vote. They’ve changed ballot language, draconian in a dramatic way. With the last election. They did that with abortion rights. It didn’t work in that case.” However, the CNN reporter would again interject, asking Brown pressing questions.
“One, are you out of touch on those issues? Two, should you guys have done a better job in pushing back?” the reporter asked, echoing criticism toward the Democratic Party that they are disconnected to the interests of average Americans.
Brown responded, maintaining, “I’m not out of touch with those issues I go home. I hear people all the time. I know how they focus group and they lie. How do you call me out of touch when they lie about an issue? … If you want to be so cynical as a reporter that, Oh, it worked. We applaud them.” Brown seemingly urged the media to be the arbiter of truth in ad campaigns, stating, “Well yeah but your job is a fair player because I think you are. I’ve known you a long time, is rather than commenting on comment on that, they lie. And that’s not a fair way of play.”
The defeated incumbent senator also shared a statement on X, where he emphasized that his party must return to representing the working class, which has overwhelmingly shifted toward Trump. He said, “The workers have drifted away from democrats, but we’ve got to talk directly to workers. We’ve got to restore the tradition and the history of democrats being with party workers, not just union workers, workers, whether you punch a clock or swipe a badge or work for tips or care for an aging parent or raising children, we’ve got to be better party and focus on the idea didn’t do that over the last three years, and we paid this price quarters have drifted away from them.”
