Sounding off in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s Monday, November 25 post on Truth Social about raising tariffs on goods imported from Mexico as a way of forcing the country to much more seriously handle migrants flowing through its borders and into America, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum clapped back, going berserk.
As background, the president-elect declared that he would issue an executive order on day one of his new administration that imposes a 25% tariff on all goods coming into the United States from Mexico and Canada, as well as yet higher tariffs on China, as a way of fighting back against the flow of illegal immigrants and fentanyl into America.
In the post about Canada and Mexico, he said, “As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before. Right now a Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border. On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders.”
Continuing, he noted that they could avoid the tariffs by just stopping illegal immigration, saying, “This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country! Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem. We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!”
And, in a post about China and fentanyl from it flowing into America through Mexico, he said, “Thave had many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs, in particular Fentanyl, being sent into the United States – But to no avail. Representatives of China told me that they would institute their maximum penalty, that of death, for any drug dealers caught doing this but, unfortunately, they never followed through, and drugs are pouring into our Country, mostly through Mexico, at levels never seen before. Until such time as they stop, we will be charging China an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs, on all of their many products coming into the United States of America. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Predictably, that freaked out President Sheinbaum of Mexico, as much of Mexico’s industrial base is built around exporting good into the United States. She, in a letter and read remarks, threatened tit-for-tat tariffs as a response, ignoring that Trump said he would establish such tariffs only if Mexico doesn’t stop the flow of illegal immigrants and fentanyl.
“One tariff would be followed by another in response, and so on until we put at risk common businesses,” Sheinbaum said, implying that she’s launch tit-for-tat tariffs as a response. She added that inflation would hurt everyone, saying, “It is unacceptable and would cause inflation and job losses in Mexico and the United States.”
But, after making those threats, she did seem to back down, indicating that she wants “dialogue” between America and Mexico. She said, “Dialogue is the best path to achieve understanding, peace and prosperity for our two countries. I hope our teams can meet soon.” She also said that she would shut down the migrant caravans that have caused much anger in America, saying, “Caravans of migrants no longer reach the border.”
