In the aftermath of President-elect Donald Trump’s landslide victory, countless woke celebrities have fled X in protest, some joining BlueSky, an app that appears to be the liberal alternative to Elon Musk’s platform. Among the latest to leave the platform is famous “Star Wars” actor Mark Hamill, who will join the others in their exodus to BlueSky.
The popular news account on X, DiscussingFilms, reported on the news, writing, “Mark Hamill says he will no longer post on X/Twitter. “I’ve fled Leon’s site for bluer skies.”” The post sparked a reaction from users on X where some were skeptical if the actors permanently boycott X. “Every time someone ‘quits’ X, they gotta post about it here first! 😂 It’s like they’re not really leaving, just playing to the crowd for some extra drama. Happens so often now, and guess what? They almost always end up coming back!” one user wrote.
The American Tribune reported on other public figures who decided to also quit X in following the election, such as former CNN host Don Lemon, who said, “I’ve loved connecting with all of you on X, but it’s time for me to leave the platform.” Continuing, he said, “I once believed it was a place for honest debate and discussion, transparency, and free speech, but I now feel it does not serve that purpose.”
Lemon also blasted the terms of service for X, writing, “In addition, starting this Friday, November 15, X is implementing new terms of service, which among other things states that ‘All disputes … be brought exclusively in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas or state courts located in Tarrant County, Texas…’ The full terms of service can be found here: https://x.com/en/tos.”
Continuing to criticize the X terms, he added, “As the Washington Post recently reported on X’s decision to change the terms, this ‘ensures that such lawsuits will be heard in courthouses that are a hub for conservatives, which experts say could make it easier for X to shield itself from litigation and punish critics?’ I think that speaks for itself.”
Additionally co-host on “The View” Sunny Hostin also decided her time on X had come to and end, where she claimed Elon Musk had “ruined” the platform under his ownership. “Elon Musk took it over and I feel like he ruined it,” she stated. “Black Twitter was a thing that I loved and it was sort of replaced… with miosognyn and racism.” She added, “I don’t want to be affiliated with anything that he owns. I’m not going to buy a Tesla, I’m not going to buy Tesla stock.”
Furthermore, shortly after The Guardian announced it would be leaving X, it released a comical statement essentially claiming it would still use the platform. “X users will still be able to share our articles, and the nature of live news reporting means we will still occasionally embed content from X within our article pages. Our reporters will also be able to carry on using the site for news-gathering purposes, just as they use other social networks in which we do not officially engage,” the outlet said.
