Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith recently sounded off on “woke culture” and “cancel culture” amid the leftist backlash to a wave of Trump dance celebrations in the NFL. As a result of the controversy surrounding the innocuous celebrations, the NFL released a statement maintaining none of the athletes would be fined for the conduct.
However, Smith pointed out that it is ridiculous for the league even to issue a statement on the dances in the first place. “Here’s why I’m p—ed off, that the NFL had to even issue a statement about it. Because celebrations usually don’t warrant that,” he explained. “It doesn’t require a response from the league. So why was it necessary this time?”
Smith continued, calling out people who remain in a mindset that compels them to lash out at everything they disagree with. “You know why? Because we got a bunch of people still living with their heads in the cloud acting like they get to protest every little damn thing,” he continued. “This is America. Donald Trump won the election, rather convincingly, I might add,” he said, seemingly calling for people to get over the results of the election.
The ESPN personality noted that he is irritated over woke ideology and cancel culture, which he claims played a decisive role in Trump’s election. “And why am I ticked off? Because it was emblematic of the climate that we’ve been living in for years now, which is why I believe Donald Trump was really elected… woke culture, cancel culture, oh hell yes, that played a role,” he said.
Smith went on, “When you got people walking around wondering whether or not they’re echoing the right pronoun. Wondering whether or not that was gonna cost them their job or being PC because, God forbid, your opinion is different than the average folk walking around in America. Lord knows what would happen to you. That’s what America regressed to.”
Commenting on UFC fighter Jon Jones who did the Trump dance after winning a recent fight, Smith pointed out that that Dana White didn’t feel the need to comment on it. “I got news for you. Football players are usually American people. So are basketball players. So are UFC fighters, they got a right to support who the hell they want without the league needing to send in a response,” he said.
The American Tribune reported on other comments from Smith when he reacted to the meltdowns from leftist celebrities in the aftermath of the election. “The American people have spoken. You can say what you want, but this country has said we went too far left.” Furthermore, Smith called for an end to the leftist nonsense. “Enough’s enough. We got to stop this nonsense. It’s about our pocketbooks, and it’s about safety. Period. And if you don’t like it, get over it. The bottom line is the economy was doing well before COVID,” he said. He added, “So for me, I would have tried, because obviously it’s late night, I would have tried to be a bit funny and humorous with it and let everybody know it’s not gloom and doom.”
