Speaking during the Thursday, November 21 White House Press Briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre spoke out about Thanksgiving and argued that really the American public should be grateful to the Biden-Harris Administration this year because, she claimed, there has been “relief” at the grocery store.
As background, the Biden-Harris Administration has faced significant pushback over the years for its general economic, fiscal, and monetary policies because of the relatively high rate of inflation experienced by the public during the Biden years. Particularly, the 2021 and 2022 years saw painfully high inflation; though the rate of inflation has since decreased, actual prices have not.
Beginning her speel about how really the public should be grateful, a claim that came after she described the president’s plans, KJP told Americans to be grateful. She said, “And on a related note, as Americans prepare for Thanksgiving, there’s one more thing to be thankful for: much-needed relief at the grocery store and the gas pump.”
Continuing, she claimed that the actual cost of a Thanksgiving meal has fallen, something with which the general public would probably disagree given the painful grocery price inflation seen in recent years. She said, “For the second year in a row, the average cost of a Thanksgiving meal is falling and many grocery chains are offering deals for the holiday.”
Adding to that with data from the Farm Bureau, but not getting into the important matter of what goods have actually fallen in price and by how much, the press secretary said, “According to the American Farm Bureau, the average price of the typical Thanksgiving dinner fell 5 percent, with turkey prices down 6 percent.”
She added, commenting on the price of gasoline, “And as more Americans are getting ready to travel to see family members and loved ones, the price of gas has fallen to its lowest point in more than three years. Prices at the pump are down about 25 cents per gallon compared to this time last year and below $3 per gallon in almost 30 states.”
She added, patting her administration on the back for what she claimed was a success for the middle class, “There’s more to do, and we’re fighting to further lower costs and grow the middle class. President Biden will continue to use every tool available to help American families put food on the table and keep money in their pockets.” Watch her here:
Commenters on X (formerly Twitter) sounded off about her claims and used humor to rip into them with a vengeance. One such commenter said, “What I am thankful for this Thanksgiving is that Trump won, and we won’t have to listen to her blatant lies!” Another said, “Grocery prices are down? Maybe for some, but it’s still a far cry from what we had under Trump.” Still another commenter said, “Does she even grocery shop? She lies.”
