In the wake of Whoopi Goldberg’s controversial comments about a Staten Island Bakery, there have been increasing calls from users on social media for the co-host of “The View” and ABC to be held accountable for what some have described as an “unwarranted attack” on the “innocent” Holtermann’s Bakery. For context, Goldberg had placed an order at the bakery but was told it could not be fulfilled as there was an unexpected failure in equipment.
However, Goldberg said on air that she may have been snubbed by the business because of her political leanings. “Now, I should tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political leanings, and the place that made these refused to make them for me,” she said during a recent segment. “They said that their ovens had gone down, but folks went and got them anyway, which is why I’m not telling you who made them. It’s not because I’m a woman, but perhaps they did not like my politics,” she continued.
“While Whoopi’s unwarranted attack on an innocent bakery may not’ve had the quantity of victims that Alex Jones can boast of, and though it did not last for years like Jones’ intentional torment, the offenses are of like kind. Maximum penalties for her and ABC,” one person wrote. Libs of TikTok asked, “Will The View go up for auction soon?”
Libs of TikTok provided additional context while highlighting the impact that Goldberg’s comments had on the small business. “Whoopi Goldberg lied and claimed a bakery refused her order because of her political views with zero evidence. In reality, the bakery actually had an issue with their boiler,” the account wrote. “Whoopi tried to destroy this woman’s life and her business.”
Conservative commentator Oli London noted the calls to have Goldberg fired. “Calls grow to fire Whoopi Goldberg from The View after she falsely defamed a bakery saying they refused to serve her because of her liberal beliefs,” he said. “The bakery has slammed the TV star for making up a story that they refused to serve her, when in fact they couldn’t serve her or any customer because their oven had broken down.”
Republican Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella said at a press conference outside of Holtermann’s Bakery, “And I think the bottom line here is after we’re going to call up Jill, who has had to endure something that she shouldn’t have to endure, these people are up at three or four o’clock every morning.” He added, “The sacrifices they’ve made, the holidays they’ve missed with their families to make Staten Island better. They have sacrificed for 145 years.”
Jill Holtermann, the owner expressed gratitude for the support she has received in the wake of Goldberg’s comments. “It’s a community that I have to tell you. I’m so overwhelmed by the support between finding out yesterday this even happened, getting phone calls and then people coming in, people from all over to supporting us in every way,” she said, “We had phone calls yesterday from Alabama, guys, I’m going to give you $50 send it to a school, send them donuts, send them cupcakes. The support has been so overwhelming, and I know how hard my family has worked to keep this business alive,” she said. “And I wish my father was here today to see this. He would never believe it.”
