Following the highly anticipated fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, Netflix is facing a lawsuit after many viewers raised complaints about the rampant glitches and buffering that reportedly occurred throughout the event. The suit filed in Florida accuses the streaming giant of a “breach of contract” over the interruptions that occurred during the fight.
Netflix released a statement acknowledging the glitches on Monday, explaining that the “unprecedented scale” of the event presented technical hurdles that needed to be addressed. While the company praised the teams responsible for mitigating the issues, Netflix acknowledged the concerns of viewers, maintaining there was “room for improvement.
Netflix executive Elizabeth Stone said, “This unprecedented scale created many technical challenges, which the launch team tackled brilliantly by prioritizing stability of the stream for the majority of viewers. I’m sure many of you have seen the chatter in the press and on social media about the quality issues. We don’t want to dismiss the poor experience of some members and know we have room for improvement but still consider this event a huge success.”
The American Tribune recently reported on other controversy surrounding Netflix in the lead-up to the election after the platform’s founder, Reed Hastings, made a $7 million donation to the Harris-Walz campaign. Subsequently, Netflix saw its highest day of subscription cancellations of the entire year. After the multimillion-dollar contribution to the Super PAC supporting Vice President Harris, cancellations of the streaming service nearly tripled.
The backlash was driven by conservatives on social media who called on fellow supporters of President-elect Donald Trump to cancel their Netflix subscriptions in protest. Hastings was vocal about his support for Vice President Harris in the months before Election Day, writing on X shortly after President Biden withdrew from the 2024 race in July, “Congrats to Kamala Harris — now it is time to win.”
One user commented under Hastings’ post, “Just cancelled Netflix…this was the final straw…too woke and clearly anti American…any company actively contributing to Harris who lied for 4 years and is completely unfit for office is not getting my money…” Many others commented a similar sentiment, expressing that they would can their Netflix subscriptions.
Another person said, “Well folks, it looks like Mr. Hastings needs a reminder of what happened to a few other companies when they supported WOKE! Lesson 1 is when you are in business and your business supports patrons on both sides of the isle, you don’t alienate 50% of your customers by making stupid political statements! Lesson 2 is that your stockholders hold you accountable for your actions!”
Another user offered criticism of Hastings’ political activism, commenting, “Giving that lawless clown $7 million to further destroy our country is outrageous. Neither she nor Biden have done one positive thing for Americans. She lied to our knowing faces that Biden was senile – we all knew it! – now she, Extreme Hakeem and your leftist media loudly claiming SHE WAS NEVER BORDER CZAR AND NEVER IN CHARGE OF THE BORDER when we all heard it with our own ears!”
