Throughout the campaign trail, Vice President-elect JD Vance constantly defended his wife from vile attacks. Vance continually fired back at the derogatory comments from detractors, maintaining that his wife, Usha, was “out of your league.” Conservatives have praised Vance’s handling of the attacks, pointing to it as an example of how a husband should confidently defend his wife.
Vance said during an interview before the election, “My attitude to these people attacking my wife is, she’s beautiful, she’s smart. What kind of man marries Usha, a very smart man and a very lucky man, importantly. And my view is look, if these guys want to attack me or attack my views, my policy views, my personality, come after me, but don’t attack my wife. She’s out of your league.”
The clip gained traction on social media, where users reacted, applauding Vance for how he navigated the attacks against his family. “JD Vance defends the disgusting attacks by the left against his wife,” the popular X account Insurrectionist Barbie wrote, sharing a clip from the interview. Another person said, “JD Vance defending his wife is sweet, but let’s be real—if he had a dollar for every attack, he could fund a reality show called “Keeping Up with the Vances.”
The American Tribune reported on other comments Vance delivered, addressing controversial remarks made by billionaire Mark Cuban. During an interview on “The View,” Cuban said, “Donald Trump, you never see him around strong, intelligent women. Ever.” The billionaire added, “It’s just that simple. They’re intimidating to him. He doesn’t like to be challenged by them, and, you know, Nikki Haley will call him on his nonsense with reproductive rights and how he sees and treats and talks about women. I mean, he just can’t have her around. It wouldn’t work.”
Addressing Cuban’s claims at a Michigan rally, Vance said, “Well, first of all, it’s insulting my wife, who’s a very strong and very intelligent woman and goes to nearly every one of my campaign events with me. And it’s insulting to Lara Trump, who’s done an incredible job as co chair of the RNC. It’s insulting to Melania [Trump], who has the number one New York Times best selling book right now.”
Continuing to praise his wife and claiming Cuban was a “surrogate” for the Kamala Harris campaign, Vance said, “I’m maybe especially grateful to have her today, because I don’t know if you saw that Kamala Harris surrogate Mark Cuban said that the Trump campaign doesn’t surround itself with smart and accomplished women.”
Vance then touted his rebuttal that Usha is out of Cuban’s league, asserting, “And I thought to myself, ‘well Mark, my wife is way out of your league.’” The Ohio senator built on that point, including other women around Trump in that category. “So is Melania Trump by the way, so is Susie Wiles, who is running the Trump campaign,” he said.
