Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) recently made a false claim regarding illegal immigration during an interview with the New York Times. While discussing immigration, which was an election-defining issue, Pelosi attempted to claim that former President Donald Trump had seen higher levels of illegal immigration than President Biden.
During the interview, Pelosi was asked, “Most of the voters, though, said that they voted on the economy and inflation and immigration. These were the main issues. Those aren’t cultural issues. Those are policy issues.” The California Democrat downplayed the assertion that immigration was a policy issue, stating, “Well, immigration’s a cultural issue.”
Pelosi suggested that it was Trump who made illegal immigration a cultural issue when he pointed out that some of the illegal aliens unlawfully crossing the southern border where criminals. “When the candidate for president is saying that these people coming in are murderers, rapists, thieves and all the rest of that. He made that a cultural issue,” Pelosi continued.
The former House Speaker then suggested that Trump was incorrect to label illegal immigrants as criminals, despite there being federal laws that make unlawfully crossing the border a crime. “And [Trump] said they were criminals. And they weren’t. They weren’t,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi then incorrectly claimed that there were more illegal immigrants coming into the country under former President Trump than President Biden. “I don’t think we were clear enough by saying fewer people came in under President Biden than came under Donald Trump,” she said. Reports indicate that approximately 10 million illegal immigrants have entered the country under Joe Biden, while roughly 2.5 million came into the country under Trump.
Regardless, Pelosi claimed that illegal immigration was merely a “clarity” issue. “It’s clarity of the message, and if that’s what Bernie’s talking about, and that’s what Joe Manchin’s talking about, we weren’t clear in our message as to what things are, then I agree with that. And that was one of the concerns I expressed about saying we haven’t put forth what was done. It’s our legacy, too,” she said.
The American Tribune recently reported on an alarming claim from Pelosi where she claimed that Trump is suffering from “cognitive degeneration.” Pelosi said, “I think what the ex-president just said is further indication of his cognitive degeneration. You saw recently how he was talking about whether he chose electrocution or being eaten by sharks. Something is very wrong there and indicative also is diminishing the power of the press, which is the guardian of our freedom in our country.”
“So I think people might think about voting for him and have to know that he can’t last as president for four years with his brain deteriorating at the rate it is and it is clearly evident and they may be voting for J. D., which would be a horrible thing for our country,” she continued. Predictably, Pelosi received backlash online, where many disagreed with the assertion.
