Co-host of “The View,” Whoopi Goldberg, has recently faced pushback from conservative critics online over her response to the joke from Tony Hinchcliffe at a recent Trump rally. Hinchcliffe, a famous Austin, Texas-based comedian, sparked an uproar from the left after he jokingly compared Puerto Rico to a “floating island of garbage” in light of environmental concerns.
The incident was addressed during a recent segment on “The View,” Goldberg dismissed a statement from the Trump campaign that Hinchcliffe’s comments did not reflect the views of the former president or his campaign. Furthermore, the co-host attempted to convince viewers that the comedian’s comments are reflective of how Trump “thinks of you.”
Goldberg said, “A spokesperson said the joke was in poor taste and did not reflect the campaigns or, you know, whose views. This should not come as a surprise to anyone. This is not new. It’s just really clear, and it’s upfront, and now you see it, and all those people tell them who are sitting in that audience, now you know, now you know how he thinks about you, and when the when his group says, Oh no, that doesn’t it does reflect, we’re telling you, it does reflect you.”
However, users online were quick to point out that Goldberg was more than willing to look past comments that came directly from President Joe Biden’s mouth in which he derided roughly half of the country, labeling Trump’s supporters “garbage.” Goldberg covered for Biden, taking the president’s follow-up statement at face value that it was merely a “tongue slip.”
“The President, current president, said something, and then everybody lost their minds,” Goldberg said, dismissing the reaction. As background, President Biden said, “Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico floating out of garbage. Well, let me tell you something. I don’t know….the Puerto Ricans that I know, or Puerto Rico, where I’m in my home state of Delaware, they’re good, decent, honorable people. The only garbage I see floating out there is just supporters.”
Goldberg cited a statement from the president after he began receiving substantial backlash, claiming that he meant to criticize the “hateful rhetoric” as “garbage” despite clearly calling out Trump’s supporters and speaking nothing of rhetoric. “Now he was put to clarify that he was really referring to the hateful rhetoric as garbage. So I don’t understand why you clutching your pearls, because you’re trying to make something out of a tongue slip,” Whoopi said in other comments.
Sharing a clip of the segment on “The View,” Libs of TikTok, wrote, “DNC operative Whoopi Goldberg had a meltdown over a comedian’s joke about Peurto Rico. You would think she would be equally, if not more alarmed at the President calling half the country garbage, right? Wrong. She says Republicans are “clutching their pearls” and justifies Biden’s comment. Seems hypocritical!”

“The outrage from the left is based on ignorance. The reference to Puerto Rico and garbage is actually related to the huge garbage disposal problem they have on the island. It’s like New York and barges of garbage in the 70s. He wasn’t suggesting the PR residents were garbage,” one person wrote.
