Co-host of “The View,” Whoopi Goldberg, recently faced backlash for downplaying a heartwarming speech from former President Donald Trump’s 17-year-old granddaughter, Kai, who spoke at the Republican National Convention. Kai offered a personal testimony to the crowd, offering her perspective on Trump as a “normal” grandpa.
In part of her speech at the convention shortly after the failed assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, Kai said, “I’m speaking today to share the side of my grandpa that people don’t often see,” she said. “To me, he’s just a normal grandpa. He gives us candy and soda when our parents aren’t looking. He always wants to know how we’re doing in school.”
Speaking about the endless legal battles Trump has endured, she said, “Even when he’s going through all these court cases, he always asks me how I’m doing. He always encourages me to push myself to be the most successful person I can be.” Expressing how Trump motivates her, she added, “Obviously, he sets the bar pretty high, but who knows, maybe one day I’ll catch him.”
However, Goldberg took issue with this speech from Trump’s granddaughter, outright suggesting that it was nothing more than an attempt to “humanize” the former president. The co-host has faced pushback online for the remark, with some implying that Goldberg is trying to “dehumanize” Trump, as part of the broader mainstream media attacks that have vilified the Republican presidential candidate in recent years.
“I have a lot of faith in the American people. And I don’t know very many men who want to be talked to the way that this man has been talking to men in his audience,” Goldberg stated to the panel. “I don’t know any women — and I know his grandchild was up on the thing and they’re trying to humanize him and change your idea about who this guy is.”
Weighing in on Goldberg’s remarks, one person wrote, “Trumps granddaughter is trying to humanize him? … Whoopi is trying to dehumanize Trump, so the next time they plot an assassination, the people are desensitized. We already witnessed that. This is less than a week after the attempt. Let that sink in. These people are working overtime to try and control people’s minds.”
Another person commented, “I don’t think she was ‘mocking’ his granddaughter, I think she was trying to counter the incredible job Kai did, bravely going in front of a room full of people to speak about the Grandfather whom she clearly adores, days after he’d been shot at on a different stage. ‘They’re trying to humanise him’. That is actually her saying “that girls undone in a few minutes speech, years of work we’ve spent trying to dehumanise him’’. They don’t want people to see his humanity, to judge him for who he really is, because they will lose – badly.” they wrote.
Another person pointed out how it seemed that Goldberg was directly trying to program how viewers felt about Trump. “Don’t let them change you’re idea of who that guy is” that idea they have been working so hard to pound into you’re head for 9 years. That idea which all it is an idea. She literally told them out loud and they can’t figure it out,” another person said.
