During his massive hit of an episode with the former president on Friday, October 25, podcaster and comedian Joe Rogan praised former President Donald Trump for his “comedic instincts.” Doing so, Rogan noted that the former president is naturally hilarious and that such became obvious during his 2016 debates with then-presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
Those comments came as the two discussed former President Trump’s popularity and his ability to garner a massive amount of publicity and public attention, with the former president saying that he doesn’t understand why he gets so much more publicity than other people. Rogan pointed to Trump’s ability to say wild, funny things as the reason why.
Former President Trump, introducing the subject, told Rogan that he had “always gotten more publicity than other people” but is unsure why that is. He said, asking Rogan to try to articulate why he always garners so much publicity, “It wasn’t like I was trying. In fact, I don’t know exactly why. Maybe you could tell me.”
Rogan, responding immediately, told the former president that the obvious reason for his popularity and publicity is that he says wild things that turn heads. Saying as much, Rogan told him, “Oh I could definitely tell ya- you said a lot of wild sh*t.” Trump, conceding the point with a massive smile, said, “Maybe.” Rogan chuckled as Trump smiled.
Continuing with the same point, Rogan noted that because Trump says such things, his enemies in the media couldn’t help but pay attention to it and draw attention to it by constantly, breathlessly reporting on it. “You said a lot of wild sh*t and then CNN, in all their brilliance by highlighting your wild sh*t, made you much more popular,” he said.
Adding to that point, he noted that such attention and hyperbolic reporting on comedic comments boosted Trump dramatically, saying, “And they boosted you in the polls because people were tired of someone talking in this bullsh*t, pre-prepared politician lingo. And even if they didn’t agree with you, they at least knew whoever that guy is. That’s him. That’s really him.”
Rogan also noted that other public figures are unable to do the same thing because they just push nonsensical, pre-rehearsed answers that don’t ever get to the point in the same way. He said, “When you see certain people talk, certain people in the public eye, you don’t know who they are. You have no idea who they are. It’s very difficult to know. You see them in conversations. They have these pre-planned answers, they say everything. It’s very rehearsed. You never get to the meat of it.”
Then, the podcaster went on to praise Trump’s “comedic instincts” and funny comments, saying, “It’s funny. It’s stand-up. It’s funny stuff. You have, like, comedic instincts. Like when you said to Hillary, ‘You’d be in jail.’ Like, that’s great timing. But it’s like that kind of stuff was unheard of as a politician. Like, no one had done that.”
Trump then told him, interjecting, “You know, it’s funny. You need at least the attitude of a comedian when you’re doing this business. This a dangerous business, first of all. It’s a very tough business.” Rogan told him, “It’s the most dangerous business. I mean, other than going to war, and being a firefighter or being a cop, yeah, it’s the most dangerous… especially you! I mean, you haven’t even got to the election. There’s been two assassination attempts, and they’ve brushed those out of the news like it was nothing.”
