Following a recent campaign event at a black church in Philadelphia, Vice President Kamala Harris has been called out for using another unusual accent that is atypical of her mannerisms. Harris has received criticism throughout her campaign for continually changing her accent depending on who she speaks to, leading some to conclude that she was being inauthentic.
Speaking in what sounds like the mannerisms of a southern preacher, Harris said to the crowd, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. The path may seem hard the work may seem heavy but joy cometh in the morning and church morning is on its way.” Social media users reacted to Harris’s clip, claiming it is an example of her pandering to the audience. Sharing the clip to X, End Wokeness wrote, “Kamala Harris unveils a new accent at a black Philadelphia church.”
“Nothing worse than a phony and someone who doesn’t know who they are. This woman changes her personality and voice to pander to who she’s around. She may fool some people, but she’s not fooling the King of kings and Lord of lords,” one person wrote. “Are we just going to skip over the part where a CHURCH let Kamala Harris speak? Kamala Harris essentially told Christians they were not welcome at her rallies,” RedWave Press said.
Others pointed out how Harris would likely be praised for being relatable to the crowd, whereas a Republican would be called racist for doing something similar. “The left calls this “Code-switching” which if person on the right did, it would be called racist. It’s adopting a stereotypical way of saying things to make the person more relatable to the audience, in other words, its pandering, and identity politics on steroids,” one person wrote.
Given that Harris was campaigning in a church, many called out the controversial incident where she seemingly mocked two Christian protestors who were kicked out of her rally in Wisconsin. After one of the individuals had proclaimed “Christ is King!” the vice president said, “Oh you guys are at the wrong rally.” She instructed them to go to the “smaller” rally “down the street” referring to former President Trump.
Harris has also been called out by pro-life Christian groups for her recent refusal to make concessions on abortion based on religious exemption. Harris was asked during an interview, “What concessions would be on the table? Religious exemptions for example, is that something you would consider?” Vice president replied, “I don’t think we should be making concessions when we are talking about a fundamental freedom to make decisions about your own body.”
Responding to Harris’ comments, the Center for Baptist Leadership wrote on X, “Absolutely chilling: Kamala Harris says that she does not believe in religious exemptions for abortion. This means that all Christian hospitals, healthcare providers, businesses, etc., would be forced to provide/cover abortion if she got her way. It would be the end of the First Amendment and religious liberty as we know it.”
