In a momentous election moment that occurred on October 25, 2024 at 11:58 a.m. EST, the Washington Post editorial board, allegedly pushed into doing so by owner and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, declined to endorse Vice President and 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. As might be expected, the woke sphere exploded over the decision.
Announcing its much rumoured and highly anticipated decision, the Washington Post’s editorial board said, “The Washington Post will not be making an endorsement of a presidential candidate in this election. Nor in any future presidential election. We are returning to our roots of not endorsing presidential candidates.”
Continuing, it quoted what its editorial board wrote in 1960, which was, “The Washington Post has not ‘endorsed’ either candidate in the presidential campaign. That is in our tradition and accords with our action in five of the last six elections. The unusual circumstances of the 1952 election led us to make an exception when we endorsed General Eisenhower prior to the nominating conventions and reiterated our endorsement during the campaign. In the light of hindsight we retain the view that the arguments for his nomination and election were compelling. But hindsight also has convinced us that it might have been wiser for an independent newspaper in the Nation’s Capital to have avoided formal endorsement.”
As might be expected, the decision set off leftists. For example, former WaPo executive editor Marty Baron said, “This is cowardice, with democracy as its casualty. @realdonaldtrump will see this as an invitation to further intimidate owner @jeffbezos (and others). Disturbing spinelessness at an institution famed for courage.”
Predictably, it wasn’t just editors and journalists, but also media types, who melted down and yelled about cancelling their subscriptions to WaPo. For example, Paul Feig, who directed the much-derided all-female “Ghost Busters,” wrote, “Great, another billionaire protecting his own self-interest instead of the country’s. Nice knowing you, @washingtonpost. Subscription canceled.”
Similarly, “Star Wars” actor and committed leftist Mark Hamill wrote, also on X, “I canceled our subscription to the LA Times because I want to make it clear that I am not okay with them being silent. In dangerous times, honest people need to stand up. This is the only way to show I’m standing up.- mh #ThankYouMarielGarza 🙏”
That ridiculous post from Hamill came in response, as the hashtag implies, to a post about Los Angeles Times editorials editor, Mariel Garza, who said, “I am resigning because I want to make it clear that I am not okay with us being silent. In dangerous times, honest people need to stand up. This is how I’m standing up.”
Hamill wasn’t the only actor to freak out. George Takei, the “Star Trek” actor known for being a leftist, also posted about the matter on X and said people should stay off of Amazon to punish Bezos for the WaPo snub of Kamala. Tweeting about the matter, Takei said, “If Jeff Bezos cowers before power, we the consumers should show him ours by staying off Amazon through the election.”
And on the same line, always anti-Trump Rob Reiner wrote, “The Washington Post editorial board is a disgrace. For the newspaper that exposed the Pentagon Papers and the Watergate scandal to not take a position and endorse a candidate in the most consequential Presidential election in 165 years is reprehensible.”
