In some absolutely awesome news from Florida, the longtime blue county of Miami-Dade, one that hasn’t gone red since Jeb Bush’s gubernatorial election in 2002, has flipped, at least temporarily, to a red county thanks to mass turnout from early voters in the area. Such is what a live update on October 24 showed, one that has held true over the ensuing days.
According to a live update that occurred at 2:32 p.m. Eastern on the 24th, one reported on by Breitbart, showed, as that outlet reported, “Republicans across the state of Florida leading Democrats in terms of early and mail-in voting combined, seeing 44.20 percent for Republicans — or 1,382,165 votes — to the Democrats’ 35.54 percent, or 1,111,890 votes.”
Further voting records coming in have tended to reinforce that outcome, with the 9:53 AM update on Oct 26, 2024, showing that registered Republicans have managed to cast, so far, 1,767,690 votes, or 44.89% of those cast. Meanwhile, registered Democrats have cast 1,358,307 votes, or 34.50% of those cast. Independents have cast 728,481 votes, or 18.50%.
Adding to Republican votes is the shocking news that Miami-Dade Count flipped red on that Thursday, as the news and politics-focused X (formerly Twitter) account Florida’s voice tweeted, saying, “BREAKING: Miami-Dade County officially flips Republican in the early and mail-in voting for the 2024 election by party.”
Data from the live data on votes cast from Florida’s voice showed that to be true; the 2:32 p.m. EST data update showed that, as Breitbart reported on the day the massive change occurred, Republicans cast “114,195 total votes in the county compared to 114,113 for Democrats.“ It appears that Republicans have a large edge in in-person early voting and Democrats have a major edge in mail-in voting.
Later updates have shown that the same flip remains true. For example, the Florida Voice voting update on Oct 26, 2024, at 9:53 AM EST found that registered Republicans have so far cast 147,474 votes. That compares to just 136,567 votes cast by registered Democrats and 90,627 cast by area Independents. That data meant that the Republicans were up by 2.9 points.
The overall news from Florida, news that is very good news for the former president, coincides with Florida becoming a solidly red state rather than a purple one. The state flipped red in terms of registered Republicans versus registered Democrats in November of 2021. Now, Republicans have over a million more registered voters in the Sunshine state than Democrats.
The Miami-Dade news is apparently even shocking Democrats. According to the Associated Press, which reported on the matter, Christine Alexandria Olivio, a Democratic House candidate who is running in Florida’s 26th Congressional District, which is in South Florida, told the AP “This is not what we expected.” She added, “We’re getting our butts kicked right now.”
Adding to the potentially very good news for Republicans is that Hispanic voters appear to be trending toward the Republican Party. The big swing, which took place in part thanks to higher Republican turnout, came largely thanks to the Hispanic voters in the nearly 72% Hispanic county deciding to turn out and back former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
