Speaking to a large crowd of 700 on Wednesday, October 23, in Reno, Nevada’s Silver Legacy Casino, the same speech in which he spent half an hour torching Kamala Harris, Senator and 2024 Trump running mate JD Vance hammered two journalists who tried pressing him, dismantling both without breaking a sweat.
After speaking for about half an hour, the senator started taking questions. One question came from a local TV reporter, who asked, “If elected, what specifically would you do to prevent transgender women from playing in women’s sports because the University of Nevada, Reno’s president — a Republican — said it’s against the state constitution to forfeit a game for reasons related to gender identity?” one local TV journalist asked.
Responding, the senator and VP candidate noted that he sees Title IX as being what could be used to protect the interests of young women as applied to women’s athletics in school, given that part of the purpose of the legislation was to protect against sex-based discrimination in educational settings.
Beginning, he noted the safety implications of the matter and commented on how it impacts his own family, saying, “This is a public safety issue, especially with contact sports. I’m the father of a 2-year-old daughter. I don’t want my little girl to grow up to compete in sports and then to get bludgeoned by a man. That’s disgusting. It’s disgraceful.”
Continuing, he sounded off on the whole idea of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports and warned that there would be downsides and consequences. He said, “In the name of a far-left lunatic progressive idea, we are destroying girls’ sports in this country. It’s going to have ramifications far beyond just athletic competition.”
In another question, Sen. Vance was asked about a February of 2020 post in which he argued that then-president Donald Trump hadn’t delivered much of his economic agenda in his term. In the post, Vance said, “Trump has just so thoroughly failed to deliver on his economic populism (excepting a disjointed China policy).”
Responding, Sen. Vance said that his opinion on the president has shifted significantly since then, but that at the time of that second election he was still buying into the media lies about the president. He said, “When Donald Trump was running for president (in 2020), I bought into a lot of the media lies about him.”
He then noted that the press can’t be trusted given how much it has lied, saying, “Once you get to know the guy and once you realize that the media is saying dishonest things about him and his record, you realize one, you can’t trust the national press, but two, Donald Trump’s a pretty damn good guy and he did a very, very good job.”
Then, defending the former president by saying his record speaks for itself, Sen. Vance said, “Sky-high wages, low inflation, a secure southern border, a safer country for Americans — he was a very, very good president, and he’s going to do it again if the people in Nevada give him another opportunity to be their president.”
