For whatever reason, Vice President and 2024 Democratic nominee Kamala Harris has reversed course on her prior decision to largely not do interviews, particularly with an unfriendly host, and sat down for such an interview with Fox News Channel’s Brett Baier. The interview was a disaster, with Harris falling apart when pressed by Baier and shouting when “democracy” came up.
At one point in the interview, the point at which Kamala really melted down and seemingly couldn’t make a coherent point, Baier asked her about her framing of her campaign as a “new way forward.” Namely, he pressed her on how she can possibly be such a new way given that she is part of the current administration.
Baier also, as part of his pressing Kamala on supposedly being that “new way forward,” noted that a vast supermajority of Americans see the country as being on the wrong track under the Biden-Harris Administration. The poll that found as much came from Marquette University, which found that 70 percent of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.
Baier said, pressing her on that aspect of it, “More than 70 percent of people tell the country is on the wrong track. They say the country is on the wrong track. If it’s on the wrong track, that track follows three and a half years of you being vice president and President Biden being president. That is what they’re saying. Why are they saying that? If you’re turning the page, you’ve been in office for three-and-a-half years.”
Kamala was seemingly unable to respond in a coherent fashion. She began her meltdown of a response by refusing to answer his question and describing how she can be a new track if she’s part of the current administration. Instead she pivoted to attacking the former president, snapping, “And Donald Trump has been running for office…”
That reply prompted the FNC host to point out that, as the vice president who has said she can’t think of anything she’d do differently than Biden, she’s really an incumbent. “But you’ve been the person holding the office,” he said. To that, VP Harris gave a bizarre response, telling Baeir, “You and I both know what I’m talking about. You and I both know what I’m talking about.”
Baier obviously didn’t know what she was talking about, and told her as much. He said, “I actually don’t. What are you talking about?” Harris then again proved unable to provide anything approaching a coherent response to Baier, and instead rambled about the policies of the GOP “over the last decade.”
Watch their back and forth here:
Commenters on X (formerly Twitter) found that back-and-forth hilarious and thought it reflected well on Baier. One poster of the clip, for example, said, in part, “NEW: Did anyone else find Bret Bair’s performance surprisingly impressive? I definitely did!” Another person who posted the clip wrote, in part, “What an absolute nuclear disaster of an interview with Kamala Harris.”
