In the aftermath of Vice President Kamala Harris’ appearance on ABC’s “The View,” Republicans are reportedly planning on using the Democratic presidential candidate’s comments against her in an ad blitz before the election. Harris has received criticism for her comment during the interview, notably after she indicated that she wouldn’t do anything differently than President Biden.
During the interview, liberal co-host Sunny Hostin asked Harris, “Well, if anything, would you have done something differently than President Biden during the past four years?” Hostin posed a highly relevant question as many voters have been dissatisfied with the state of America under the Biden-Harris administration with issues such as inflation, illegal immigration, and more.
However, when given an opportunity to distance herself from the failures of the current administration and highlight how her agenda as president would be different, Harris responded, “There is not a thing that comes to mind in terms of, and I’ve been a part of most of the decisions that have had impact.” The response has subsequently sparked backlash across the political spectrum.
Reports indicate that an anonymous ally close to former President Donald Trump stated that voters should “[e]xpect to see this clip every single time you turn on the television between now and Nov. 5.” Notably, Harris’ indication that she is in line with President Biden’s leadership and seeming contentment with the problems plaguing the country contradict her campaign slogan, “A New Way Forward.”
Even mainstream media networks such as CNN have called out the remarks Harris made on the “The View,” pointing out that it was a missed opportunity for the vice president to differentiate herself from President Biden amid the intense criticism about the leadership failures of the current administration. “I’m surprised frankly that she doesn’t have more to say about this given that she and her campaign know this is one of the main questions voters have about her,” Wall Street Journal Senior Political Correspondent Molly Ball said during a CNN panel.
Ball added, “And one of the main things she’s been trying to establish as part of her candidacy is that she would represent a break from the past four years and to not be able to come up with something to say in that moment, she continues to not be particularly nimble on her feet in a lot of these interviews. And this is a very obvious question that gave her an opportunity, frankly, to differentiate herself in a way that would have made news, that would have answered, I think, the curiosity of a lot of voters who want to know how she would lead differently.”
And she’s not very specific in in laying that out, and she can’t point to a decision she would she would have made differently. I which you know in an electorate that thinks that doesn’t like the way this administration has led, and that doesn’t like the track that the country is on that may not be a very satisfactory answer,” the WSJ commentator concluded.
