Rapper Macklemore has recently faced backlash after he encouraged the crowd at a recent concert in Seattle, Washington, to chant “F**k America.” Footage shows the musician, whose real name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, appearing to react to something he heard or saw in the crowd, leading him to express anti-American sentiment while on stage.
The 41-year-old “Thrift Shop” rapper said while onstage, “Straight up say it, I’m not gonna stop you. I’m not gonna stop you. Yeah, f**k America.” Subsequently, the crowd began to cheer on the singer and clap. Macklemore then performed a new song titled, “Hinds Hall 2” which features anti-Israel language, criticizing the nation’s response to the deadly October 7 attack that killed thousands. After these onstage comments, Macklemore has received massive backlash for his comment bashing the United States.
One user wrote, “Shame. This country made Macklemore possible. Where else could he have got rich and famous?? Shame.” Another person said in response, “I had to walk away from his show and a festival in Phoenix. None of the bands were political but he decided to celebrate oct 7. Such a disappointment since I didn’t know he was a radical going into the concert and it instantly ruined the vibe.”
“It’s time to turn off the radio and unsubscribe from any music or show streaming service. It’s time to bankrupt an industry! Did we forget how we treated the Dixie Chicks after 9/11?” another person added. Responding to this, another user pointed out that conservative consumers should stop supporting musicians like Macklemore, stating “I just don’t get it! All these rich ass celebrities constantly complaining about America, yet we Americans keep on supporting them making them richer! STOP FEEDING THE BEASTS! Turn off Hollywood! Musicians! Athletes! Everyone that is anti- American!”
“Irony is saying f*ck America” while standing on a stage making a million dollars from Americans, in America. What a way to make a buck. Only in America,” one person commented, illustrating how it is counterintuitive for successful musicians to bash the United States. Another added, “This is what radicalization looks like. When the leaders of a party, who control the press, constantly spew lies and hate onto the public this is what happens.”
Highlighting how it seems many take the rights afforded to them as American citizens for granted, one person said, “They would be wise to show some humility for how good we actually have it. This blind hate would disappear if these people weren’t too spoiled. They don’t even know how good they have it, and that’s the problem. Things are so good(relative to many other countries), find things to complain about. Fools.”
“No one is forced to stay here, hate it here, there are other countries to chose from. That is the beautiful thing about America, we don’t hold you prisoner here. @macklemorecan move anywhere he’d like. After all, he’s made alot of money off American fans. 𝙈𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚’𝙨 𝙣𝙚𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙭𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 $25 𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 $30 𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙤𝙣. 𝙈𝙖𝙮 10, 2024. You don’t crap on the system that you happily used to become wealthy. What Americans hate is a corrupt government who has removed the people’s power and voice. We are taking it back on November 5TH,” another person wrote, pointing out that Macklemore could live anywhere he wanted to with his vast wealth.
