JD Vance recently interviewed NBC News’ Kristen Welker, during which he shared cold, hard facts about Trump’s former presidency. Welker pressed Vance on speculation that Trump’s tariff proposals would harm the American middle class. However, the Ohio senator dismissed the forward-looking criticism from Democrats and invited them to look back at the record of when Trump implemented the tariffs during his first term.
The host asked Vance, “Well, the estimates vary, but how do you respond to that charge that Trump’s tariffs would hurt the middle class?” Addressing the claims made by Harris against former President Trump, Vance said, “If you step back a little bit, Kristen, there’s this whole thing that Kamala Harris did at the convention where she made a bunch of claims about what would happen, and not enough, actually reflection on what already happened, right?
“Because Donald Trump was already president. He used tariffs to bring manufacturing jobs back to our country,” Trump’s running mate added, noting the goal to bring back industry onshore to revive the working class in America under the Make America Great Again Platform. Vance proceeded to cite statistics, demonstrating the success of Trump’s agenda.
“I think he’ll do it again,” Vance continued, offering optimism toward the economy under a second Trump term. “And he did it while keeping prices extremely low,” he said, as one of the most significant issues throughout the Biden-Harris administration has been inflation, which many have blamed on the administration’s policies, such as unnecessary fiscal stimulus and hostility toward fossil fuels.
“Because if you go back to the Trump presidency, we had 12,000 factories that were built during Donald Trump’s presidency, inflation never really ticked above 2% his entire administration, in fact, was sort of, you know, around one and a half percent most of the time that he was president,” the Ohio Republican said, illustrating the strength of Trump’s economy.
Therefore, Vance ultimately concluded that Vice President Harris’ claims that Trump’s plans would inflict damage “way worse” than it previously was is simply illogical. “So when Kamala Harris says, if we do the thing that Trump already did, it’s going to be way worse than it was last time I just don’t think that makes a lot of sense,” he said.

The American Tribune reported on previous criticism against NBC over how the network handled a retraction of a headline regarding JD Vance. During an interview with Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Kristin Welker suggested that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris had been present at a ceremony to honor U.S. fallen service members.
However, the official Meet the Press X account had to issue a correction after the segment to clear up the record. “On our broadcast this morning, we incorrectly implied that both President Biden and Vice President Harris attended the dignified transfer of 13 American service members killed during the Afghanistan withdrawal. Biden was in attendance but Harris was not,” the post read. Conservatives subsequently blasted the network for not making a more obvious correction of their false statement.
