Vice President and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris traveled to Philadelphia, PA, on the afternoon of Monday, September 9, in the runup to her September 10 debate in Philly with former President Donald Trump. She was seen exiting her SUV and heading to Air Force 2 for the journey, but refused to take any questions from the media as she did so. For that, she was hilariously roasted by commenters on X (formerly Twitter).
Harris, as background, has largely avoided taking questions from the press, particularly in an unscripted environment. Though she did a sit-down interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, that was pre-recorded and somewhat edited by CNN. In other situations, she has not taken questions from nearby reporters, nor has she done a press conference.
Drawing attention to the recent incident in which Vice President Harris didn’t take questions from the nearby media, one of the top breaking news accounts on X, Breaking 911, posted a video of her not captioning it and wrote, “MOMENTS AGO: Kamala Harris takes zero questions as she boards plane for Philadelphia ahead of Tuesday’s debate with Donald Trump.”
The commenters on that post pulled no punches in response. One, for example, wrote that Kamala tends to put her foot in her mouth and put off people when she speaks, writing, “Everytime she opens her mouth she loses more support. It’s a strange new world for her. This has been her strategy to get ahead in the past.” On that same note, another added that this seems like it will be a disaster for Harris like the Biden-Trump debate was over the summer, writing, “Will be a disaster like Joe two months ago. God’s Work.”
Others joked about the “answers” that Kamala will have at the debate that she won’t give the media now. One commenter, for example, wrote, “Kamala must be saving all her “great answers” for the debate tomorrow. 🙄.” Similarly, another joked that people are putting faith in Kamala’s competence that they really ought not, saying, “Kamala has all the answers and solutions, Joe has been keeping her down. I know people who believe this. For realz.”
Also commenting on a potential issue with Kamala appearing for the debate with former President Trump was another commenter who joked that Kamala would try to avoid questions despite the whole point of it being answering questions, saying, “It’s gonna be really impressive watching her not take questions at the debate.”
Watch Kamala take no questions here:
CNN’s Dana Bash recently complained about Kamala not really answering her question on fracking, saying, “I tried. I mean, you can’t force somebody to answer a question, and I asked to follow up. I tried to get more into the nitty-gritty and get the answer. Sometimes, in my experience in doing interviews, is that once you ask once, fine. Twice, fine. Three times, if you don’t get a clear answer, that’s kind of your answer.”
She added, “That’s why I wanted to ask the broader question, which is, if you’ve changed your position on X, Y and Z, how can you assure voters that those positions won’t change again once they elect you?” Bash said. “A lot of liberals are like, ‘Oh, you’re asking Republican talking points,’ but that’s like a fundamental question, that if I’m a swing voter, I want to know the answer to. If I’m not sure if I’m going to vote for Trump or Harris or not vote at all, that’s something that will inform my vote.”
