The latest show in the Star Wars universe, “The Acolyte,” proved to be one the biggest flops in the franchise’s history. The show, produced by Leslye Headland, was a stark departure from the classic Star Wars hits created by George Lucas, receiving criticism for injecting social themes around the modern political climate, such as an LGBT agenda.
As a result, the show received an abysmal audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, currently sitting at just 18%, making it one of the worst audience-rated pieces of Star Entertainment in the franchise’s history. Voicing their frustration with the show, fans have organized a petition on Change.org to “de-canonize” “The Acolyte” from the Star Wars universe.
The petition titled, “Help De-canonize The Acolyte,” has gained nearly 19,000 signatures from nearly as of writing this article. The description calls out the show’s “abysmal writing,” poor cinematography, and suboptimal character development.
The petition reads, “Like so many fans of Star Wars, I found the show the acolyte absolutely frustrating. For some it might’ve been the abysmal writing, the ever-changing character motivations, or the awkward cinematography and strange jump cuts. The show was completely misdirected. For others could be the multiple ways the show breaks canon, jangles keys of established characters damaging them in the future or the way the show makes the prophecy of the chosen one completely insignificant. Help me show Disney that we want to reset the prequel era back to George’s original vision that I know so many of us love.”
Others in the comments section of the petition lamented the destruction of George Lucas’ once-great franchise he created decades ago. “As a long time SW fan, I care about the stories and the characters created by George Lucas. I hate seeing their stories being trashed and ret-conned by creators that hate the very existence of George Lucas’s original story and his characters. They can’t create so they want to destroy,” one person named Amanda wrote.
Another person named Joel, sounded off on Disney, writing, “I know Disney won’t listen. But I want to stick it to them anyway. You do Give consumers what they want, then you will lose, said consumers! Stop, hijacking, narratives, to serve your social political purposes, while writing horrible stories.”
Echoing a similar sentiment, another person stated, “This was an abomination of the Star Wars lore. The franchise should have never been given to such incompetent, ideologically motivated team, who prioritizes activism over art and good writing. This was an embarrassment for both Star Wars and cinema.”
The American Tribune recently reported that “The Acolyte” was canceled after its first season amid an onslaught of bad reviews and rock-bottom ratings. “The ultra woke Star Wars show ‘The Acolyte’ will not continue, with Lucasfilm opting not to proceed with a second season of the ‘Star Wars’ offshoot starring Amandla Stenberg. The director, Leslye Headland, was widely criticized for ignoring Star Wars cannon. She was most criticized for the episode where Iesbian witches used the Force to create babies,” the popular X account Wall Street Silver wrote.
