Former United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) captain Megan Rapinoe recently called for former NFL player and social activist Colin Kaepernick to be on Team USA in the 2028 Olympics, which will be hosted in Los Angeles. On a recent episode of her podcast “A Touch More,” Rapinoe claimed she wanted to see the former quarterback on America’s flag football team.
Rapinoe gushed over the idea of Kaepernick representing the United States in the Olympics, the country he has aggressively protested against. “Oh God, he would be so good in flag football. I mean, he would be so good in the NFL; let’s just be clear about that. He is still being blackballed from the NFL right now. I think it would be awesome,” she said.
The former soccer star stated that Kaepernick was her choice of flagbearer while noting it would be a good move to have the social activist “front and center,” representing the United States on the world stage. “He’s my flag bearer. I think that it would be really incredible to have that representation of America also be front and center at an Olympics. That would be really cool.”
Kaepernick recently noted in an interview that he still seeks to get back on the field at some point in the future. “We’re still training, still pushing,” Kaepernick said. “So, hopefully. We’ve just got to get one of these team owners to open up.”
He added, “It’s something I’ve trained my whole life for, so to be able to step back on the field, I think that would be a major moment, a major accomplishment for me. I think I could bring a lot to a team and help them win a championship.” Speaking about competing in the Olympics, Kaepernick said, “We’re gonna work on some things, see if we can make it in there, but would love to be out there.”
Last year, The American Tribune reported on comments from Megan Rapinoe regarding her activism, in which she praised the efforts of Colin Kaepernick. Rapinoe said, “When I’m talking about LGBTQ rights, when I’m taking a knee in support of Colin Kaepernick, when I’m talking about police brutality or pay equity, it’s all the same exact thing to me.” She added, “It’s just trying to make the world a better place and shedding light on issues. It’s about having everybody’s voice heard and setting up society to benefit everyone.”
The former USWNT captain continued, “Part of it is just who I am, I am gay so there’s that aspect, and I am a female athlete. So there is a lot of activism potential in there. I feel like female athletes are always on the forefront of anything activism because the intersectionality of us all just runs so deep—we’re women of color, gay, we’re women.”
Rapinoe also claimed playing for the US was “the worst job in the world.” She said, “I always say it’s the worst job in the world, because if you do your job, then you were supposed to, and if you do one hair less, then you are gonna get lambasted for it.”
