In some great news for those wanting the RNC to take the 2024 election as seriously as they are, it announced in two press releases that it had filed back-to-back lawsuits in two purplish states, GOP-leaning North Carolina and Democrat-leaning Michigan. As both states are up for grabs in the 2024 election, the lawsuits could potentially help turn the tide in the GOP’s favor.
As a reminder, the Republican National Committee, or RNC, is currently run by co-chairs. One is Michael Whatley, a Trump ally but more traditional pick for the position. The other is Lara Trump, wife of Eric Trump, the second son of the former president. Her involvement was seemingly meant to signal to GOP voters depressed by 2020 that the new RNC would be doing a much better job aiding Trump this time about.
Announcing the North Carolina suit, the RNC said, ” For the second time in the last week, the RNC and NCGOP sued the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE) – this time for failing to require identification to prove citizenship. By violating Help America Vote Act (HAVA) and not checking the identification of approximately 225,000 voters, the agency is opening the door for non-citizens to vote.”
Commenting on the North Carolina suit, RNC Chairman Michael Whatley said, “The NCSBE has once again failed in its mandate to keep non-citizens off the voter rolls, fueling distrust and jeopardizing our elections. We are committed to the basic principle – and commonsense law – that only Americans decide American elections. Deliberately failing to follow the law, right before our country’s most important election, is inexcusable. We will fight every day to ensure that NCSBE follows the law, cleans the voter rolls, and protects the vote for North Carolinians.”
Similarly, NCGOP Chairman Jason Simmons said, “This State Board continually has problems ensuring voter rolls only have verified citizens. This lawsuit will remedy their ongoing refusal to collect the required information from those who want to take part in North Carolina elections. Accountability and fidelity to following the rule of law is long overdue for the most partisan Elections Board in state history.”
As to the suit in Michigan, the RNC announced, “[T]he RNC, Michigan GOP, and chairs of Wayne County Republican committees sued the City of Detroit over its deliberate failure to hire a sufficient number of Republican election inspectors. State law mandates that election officials must hire equally from both sides of the political aisle, yet the city is refusing to comply – hiring seven times as many Democrats.”
Commenting on that suit and why it is necessary, both RNC Chairman Michael Whatley and RNC Co-Chair Lara Trump spoke about the suit, saying, “Detroit’s failure to hire Republican poll workers is the kind of bad-faith Democrat interference that drives down faith in elections. The RNC is bringing suit to remedy this completely unacceptable breach of public trust and our unprecedented election integrity campaign will continue to fight in Michigan and nationwide to protect the rights of every voter to have fair, accurate, secure and transparent elections.”
