Recent footage from the Democratic National Convention in Chicago showed protestors burning an American flag while shouting “f*ck America” in between “free Palestine” chants. The group could also be seen burning a green and black “brat” flag, apparently a term endearment used to describe Vice President Kamala Harris.
Burning the American flag has become a common feature in leftist protests in recent years, drawing anger from patriotic citizens who detest seeing the red, white, and blue desecrated. Among those who have criticized the flag burning, former President Donald Trump indicated that he wishes to make such a form of protest illegal.
“I want to get a law passed. Everyone tells me, oh sure, it’s very hard. You burn an American flag, you go to jail for one year. Got to do it, we got to do it. They say, ‘Sir, that’s not constitutional.’ We’ll make it constitutional,” said Trump. “That was terrible, what happened at the convention in Chicago. They’re burning American flags all over the place and the fake news doesn’t want to show it,” he added.
Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social, where he further slammed the flag burning. “So disgraceful to see the burning of the American Flag and the desecration of Police Cars at the Democrat’s “Party” taking place in Chicago. Five people have been killed since the start of their “Convention.” CONGRESS SHOULD IMMEDIATELY GET TO WORK! ANYONE BURNING THE AMERICAN FLAG GETS ONE YEAR IN JAIL. JUST DO IT!!! DJT,” Trump wrote.
In other news related to the Democratic Party and the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel, The American Tribune recently reported on infighting within the “Squad” between Rep. Alexandra Ocasio Cortez (D-NY) and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN). “She is working tirelessly to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and bringing the hostages home,” AOC recently said, applauding Vice President Kamala Harris’ stance calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Subsequently, Rep. Omar sounded off on her “colleagues” and the Democratic Party for not appropriately addressing the Middle-Eastern conflict. “It’s been unconscionable for me the last 10 months to witness my colleagues in this administration refusing to recognize the genocidal war that is taking place in Gaza,” she said.
Sarah Leah Whitson, executive director of Democracy for the Arab World Now, added, “Frankly, it’s a somewhat puzzling claim, given that Vice President Harris’s responsibilities don’t include U.S. foreign policy. Ultimately, the only thing we can judge by is the factual evidence. And the factual evidence is that almost a year now into the war, or 10 months into the war, there has been no ceasefire.”

Ahmed Husain, a member of DSA’s national political committee, claimed, “For people who struggle letting go of the notion of AOC as this upstart insurgent against the establishment, I think it is uncomfortable to reckon with her absorption into the establishment because it reinforces despair,” Husain said. “It reinforces this disillusionment, that we can’t do anything at all to change things in America. But that is not true. We can always change things. We can always build an alternative.”
