President Biden was recently asked point blank by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins how he felt about top-ranking Democrats allegedly forcing him out of the 2024 race. Biden appeared at the Democratic National Convention earlier this week, where the very politicians who are accused of ousting him off the ticket threw him a sending away party.
Collings asked Biden, “What’s your speech going to be about? Mr. President.” She further questioned the president, “Donald Trump claims that you were pushed out in a coup and a takeover of your party with Harris now at the top. What’s your response to that?” She asked again after Biden had trouble hearing her, “Donald Trump claims that you were pushed out, put from the top of the ticket, and this was amounts to a coup from your party? What do you make of those claims? Is, what? What’s your message to people waiting for you to pass towards here or taking this historic moment?”
“The question I asked him was about what his predecessor, Donald Trump, has been saying about what we are witnessing here, that it is no longer Joe Biden at the top of the ticket, that it is Vice President Harris Trump has been claiming that it is essentially a coup, as he has phrased it. Those are his words, and that they push Biden off the top of the ticket. He’s even claimed Joe Biden was going to crash this convention,” Harris told the CNN broadcast, summarizing Biden’s statements.
Collins noted that Biden was preparing his speech to endorse Vice President Harris, adding that “President Biden made a joke about stability when I asked about Donald Trump’s claims, we couldn’t quite hear exactly what he said.” The reporter maintained that Biden would not be delivering a “farewell speech,” stating, “And obviously, as it’s coming, it’s not a farewell speech, as his aides have underlined for us in multiple moments leading up to this, but it is going to be a moment he’s still got five months left in his presidency.”
Collings continued expressing that “it is a moment where he is essentially passing the proverbial torch to his vice president. She added that Biden would quickly leave the convention to go spend time with his family on vacation. “And I’ll note that this is the only night you’ll see President Biden at this convention. He is leaving after this he’s going on vacation and spending time with his family,” she added.
However, Collins specified that it wasn’t necessarily odd for Biden to be leaving the event early as former President Lyndon B. Johnson also refrained from the convention after he dropped out of the race during his term. She further emphasized the entire point of the evening: “passing the torch” to Kamala Harris as the only hope for the Democrats to defeat former President Trump.
“And just having him here is notable after all, 1968 when Lyndon B Johnson dropped out of the race, he did not attend his party’s convention that year, obviously history will be looking very different tonight. Aaron certainly will, and now he has done that walk through, and that will be the key moment tonight, as the President will be speaking and passing the torch to his Vice President.”
