Ever willing to post something absurd and get mocked for her vapidity and status as an ignoramus on Twitter, far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez decided to try and attack Republicans for not supporting a minimum wage increase…before being reminded that it was Democrats that killed the minimum wage bill in 2021.
It all started when the GOP Twitter account, attempting to make the Biden Administration look bad by bringing up the awful economic conditions in Joe Biden’s America, said “60% of workers report living paycheck-to-paycheck“.
AOC, replying, said, “And yet y’all still voted against raising the minimum wage“. The comment made sense given the importance she places on leftist, populist economic issues. Her Twitter bio, for example, says “US Representative,NY-14 (BX & Queens). In a modern, moral, & wealthy society, no American should be too poor to live. 💯% People-Funded, no lobbyist💰. She/her.”
However, it was also a poor point for her to make…as it was really Democrats that blocked the bill that would have raised the minimum wage from becoming law. And so it was with that tweet that she got humiliated by a Twitter fact check that pointed out that it was really turncoat Democrats, not Republicans, that blocked the bill. In its words:
The minimum wage has not changed since 2009. dol.gov/agencies/whd/m… In 2021, Congress voted on a bill to raise the minimum wage. – Passed 231-199 in the House Opposed: 192 Rs, 8 Ds + one I. Three Rs supported. – Blocked 58-42 in the Senate 7 Ds and one I joined all Rs to block the bill.
Individual accounts mocked and humiliated AOC as well. The Libertarian Party Twitter account, for instance, tweeted “We support a maximum wage of $0 for IRS and Federal Reserve employees. And $8 for you, just so you can pay @elonmusk for your blue checkmark.”
According to the information released by the Department of Labor, the federal minimum wage is unchanged from 2009, when it was raised to $7.25 an hour. Previously, the minimum wage had been increased to $5.85 per hour in 2007. It was then again increased to $6.55 per hour in 2008.
Fox News Digital, noted that, while the federal government hasn’t taken action to protect workers and raise the minimum wage, states have. Reporting on that, Fox News Digital wrote:
While the federal minimum wage is the least an employer can pay an employee, over half of the states have set the bar higher than the federal standard.
In Ohio, the minimum wage is $9.30 per hour.
In Florida, it is $10 per hour.
In Virginia, the minimum wage is $11 per hour.
In Hawaii, it is $12 per hour; in Oregon, it is $13.50; in California, it is $14 per hour.
When the minimum wage was first established in 1938 by the Fair Labor Standards Act, it was set at $.25 an hour. That is equivalent to $5.28 in 2022 dollars. In terms of Purchasing Power, the minimum wage peaked in 1968, when it was set at $1.60 an hour. That is equivalent to $13.69 in 2022 dollars.
