Late-night television host Stephen Colbert and his guest CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins appeared surprised when the live audience laughed at the suggestion that the left-leaning news outlet reported on news objectively. Apparently, Colbert’s assertion on the integrity of CNN’s reporting was not intended to be a punchline, but the audience seemed to think so.
Collins appeared on the airing of Colbert’s Monday night show, where the two discussed recent developments in the upcoming election. Collins suggested that the Trump campaign was uncertain about how to approach their strategy in attacking the Democratic Party after the major switch up on the ticket when Joe Biden dropped out and endorsed Kamala Harris.
“Trump has kind of been thrown on his heels by this, and he’s not really sure how to go after Vice President Harris. He knew his attack lines on President Biden. He really has struggled with how to how to go after someone who’s 20 years younger than him, who is a different gender, a different race. It’s kind of been this moment where he has not been able to coalesce around a single attack line,” Collins said.
Colbert replied, “I know you guys are objective over there that you just report the news as it is,” before being interrupted by an outburst of laughter. The two immediately looked surprised, as if the reaction had been unanticipated. “Oh, I know CNN makes it…” Colbert stammered. Collins asked in disbelief, “Was that supposed to be a laugh line?”
Colbert responded, “It wasn’t supposed to be, but I guess it is.” The host quickly pivoted from the incident and changed the topic to Biden dropping out of the race. “What I wanted to ask is that you guys still have your own feelings, your own bets about what’s going to happen on a daily basis. Did you think that Biden was going to step down? Did that take everybody over to CNN by surprise?”
Despite Collins’ claim that the Trump campaign is unsure how to approach combating Kamala Harris in her presidential bid, the former president has launched many attacks, calling out the vice president’s past comment on her far-left, progressive rhetoric. Trump’s team has labeled her as a radical left candidate that would depart from American values.
The American Tribune recently reported on a brand new ad from the Trump campaign that exposes Kamala Harris in a compilation of her own words, where she previously outlined her stances on various issues. The video kicks off with Harris stating, “Yeah, I am radical. We need to get radical about what we are doing and take it seriously.”
The video featured her very own commentary on issues such as the “Green New Deal,” in which she previously indicated a desire to end the filibuster. “As President of the United States, I am prepared to get rid of the filibuster to pass a Green Deal,” she said. Similarly, the anti-Harris clip addressed her intention to “ban fracking.” In another instance, she said, “There’s no question. I’m in favor of banning fracking.”
