Recently, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) appeared at the southern border, where he gave a press conference, sounding off on Vice President Kamala Harris over her record on illegal immigration. Standing in front of the San Diego sector of the border, Johnson illustrated the catastrophic consequences of the unfettered illegal immigration that has poured into the United States.
Johnson made the trip down to the embattled southern border to promote the latest Republican initiative geared toward election integrity: the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act) which would require documentary proof of American citizenship in order to vote. Johnson said, “We have an absolute catastrophe on the border, and it was engineered by the Biden-Harris administration.”
The House Speaker illustrated that earlier this year, the “epicenter” of the border crisis was in Eagle Pass, Texas, where the Del Rio sector was being bombarded with illegal crossings into the United States. However, he noted that much of this activity has now shifted to the San Diego border section, which is being completely overwhelmed.
“Back in January, I took the largest group of members of Congress down to the border, Del Rio sector, down the Eagle Pass in Texas. And at that time, that was the epicenter. And what was all there was a tragedy, humanitarian catastrophe, and we’re seeing and experiencing that here all along the border, and now in San Diego, it’s gotten so bad here, in fact, with the volume that are coming across here that the Biden-Harris administration is now flying illegal aliens from California to Texas for processing, as if Texas didn’t already have enough problems of its own,” he continued.
Johnson further criticized Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democratic politicians for stymieing Republican-led efforts to prevent illegal immigrants from influencing the outcome of American elections, a privilege reserved exclusively for citizens of the United States. The speaker estimated that approximately 16 million people have entered the country unlawfully and such a scale could seriously impact elections if there aren’t safeguards around voting.
“Kamala Harris and 198 House Democrats want to allow illegal aliens to decide American elections right now, and every noncitizen can do that, and there’s no real impediment except the honor system. We don’t believe that is going to work. Our elections are too narrow and too important to allow this to happen, especially since the administration is now on track to report 10 million encounters with illegals before October. That’s the official number. We believe, I personally believe, members of Congress believe the number is probably closer to somewhere in the 16 million person range,” he said.
Johnson said, “Only Americans should decide American elections, pure and simple. All across the country, the American people are insisting upon that, but Joe Biden and the Democrats in Congress simply don’t care, and the borders are in San Francisco, radical Kamala Harris bears the responsibility for this disaster when, when more asylum claims are being made at ports of entry and in other ways, the volume remains the same.”
