Vice President Kamala Harris has come under increased scrutiny after she kicked off her presidential bid following President Joe Biden’s announcement that he would withdraw from the 2024 race. Recently, a conservative legal organization launched several investigations into Harris’ record as a prosecutor and attorney general in California following a claim that she was “tough on crime.”
The investigation, headed by America First Legal, has initiated public records requests with the California Attorney General’s Office, looking into various allegations. Conservative Brief reported that the inquiry encompasses“non-compliance with federal donor privacy laws, failure to enforce federal immigration laws, inadequate pursuit of equal justice, lack of disclosure of conflicts of interest, failure to address evidence of misconduct, the nature of investigations by the California Fair Practices Commission, and potential cover-up of misconduct evidence.”
Specifically, Harris has called out over everything from actions that supposedly incarcerated parents whose children had consistently missed school to supporting a controversial bail bond for violent Black Lives Matter rioters during the summer of 2020. Fueling America First Legal’s inquiry into Harris are claims that she has been the most radical and progressive vice president in U.S. history.
Dan Epstein, president of the AFL, disputed the idea that she was a tough-on-crime prosecutor, stating, “A lot of her tough-on-crime reputation goes to her prosecution when she was San Francisco DA, individuals who use marijuana and other sorts of things. Our investigation, however, makes it very clear that Kamala Harris does not believe much in terms of statutes passed by legislatures, including the Federal United States, Congress, as well as the state of California.”
Epstein further added that the goal of their investigation is to determine if Harris improperly politicized the law and violated ethics. “And so those are really our probes of her not following the rule of law and bending it for a political objective,” he said. “We also probe numerous kind of potential ethics issues and failures to disclose conflicts of interest, allowing her own staff as attorney general to engage in fraud and not kind of overseeing that.”
The president of the conservative law group pointed out that “nobody disagrees” that former President Donald Trump’s recent felony conviction in the hush money case brought against him, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, is the product of “political prosecution.” Epstein noted that if Harris had followed the same line of thinking, she would have been an unfair “political prosecutor.”
“It’s fairly clear that nobody disagrees, nobody disagrees that Trump is a felon because of political prosecution,” Epstein added. “And if the standard for Kamala Harris is that the process that led to Donald Trump being convicted is one of justice and one that she follows, then logically, it means that she is a political prosecutor, not a fair honest broker.”
The American Tribune recently reported on a flashback video of Kamala Harris getting called out by Rep. Tulsi Gabbard in the Democratic presidential primary debates in 2019. Gabbard blasted then-Senator Harris on her prosecutorial record, such as imprisoning people over marijuana violations, which is thought of as being deeply unpopular among left-wing voters.
