Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) recently blasted former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle during a congressional hearing hosted by the Committee on Oversight and Accountability. Mace blatantly told Cheatle that she was “full of sh*t” during her testimony, continually accusing her of being dishonest in her answers regarding the agency’s response to the attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life earlier this month.
The Oversight Committee subpoenaed Cheatle to address the “colossal failure” that allowed 20-year-old Matthew Thomas Crooks to very nearly end the life of Trump. After the hearing in which Cheatle faced scathing bipartisan criticism and calls to step down, the director formally resigned from her position in the agency on Tuesday morning.
Mace kicked off her questioning, asking if Cheatle would like to draft her letter of resignation on the spot amid the bipartisan calls for her to step down from her position. “My first question both sides of the aisle today have asked for your resignation. Would you like to use my five minutes to draft your resignation letter? Yes or No?” Mace asked. “No, thank you,” the disgraced director said.
The Republican representative continued her intense questioning, requesting a binary response. “Was this a colossal failure?” she asked. Cheatle responded, “It was a failure.” Mace hit back, “Yes or No. Was it a colossal failure? Is the question yes or no.” Cheatle responded before being abruptly cut off, “I have admitted this is a tear…” Mace interjected, “This is a yes or no series of questions. Was this a colossal failure? Yes or no.” Cheatle admitted, “Yes.”
Mace proceeded with more yes or no questions that exposed the Secret Service director. When the South Carolina representative asked about Cheatle allegedly leaking a statement to the press, Mace outright rejected her response. “Well that’s bullsh*t,” she said, maintaining that Cheatle was being blatantly dishonest with her.
“Would you say leaking your opening statement to Punchbowl news, Politico’s playbook and Washington Post several hours before you sent it to this Committee as being political. Yes or No,” Mace asked. “I have no idea how my statement got out,” Cheatle said. “Well, that’s bullshit. So Mr. Chairman, I would like to ask unanimous consent to enter into the record articles by Punchbowl news political playbook. Washington Post, all done at 5:24am, 6:12am, 6:34am, a solid three to four hours before this committee got your statement,” Mace profanely hit back.
Mace proceeded with more questions, pressing Cheatle if she and the Secret Service were fully and honestly cooperating with the committee. After giving several answers informing Mace that she would have to get back to her at a later time, the representative said, “That is a no. You’re full of shit today. You’re just being completely dishonest.” Mace sparked a call to restore decorum in the congressional hearing after her profanity. On Tuesday morning, Director Cheatle announced her resignation from leading the United States secret service.
